I'll look and see if I can find some pics from folks snaping shots in Vegas. Here is a pic of the unit installed at the shop:

Looks nice. Add a drunken Russian trying to make sexy time with Randy and it is just like Vegas. Very nice.

The placement of the RAF looks like it will ingest warm air from the header area. If you could extend the RAF forward and over the IC diverter(like the FAD) I think the intake will get much cooler air.

The ideal solution would had been to copy this exactly as Andy saw in my car on Jan 24, 2004. Not just part of it. You want to divide the air going to the intercooler and make a separate intake for the "RAF" intake. To see how I did this exact same thing in 2004, look at the link below. For those of you that have the RAF intake, perhaps you might want to do something similar to increase the air that goes to your RAF intake, to complete the initial concept behind this design. For more details, have a look at the link. At the end, I only want to give you an option to improve on this "idea" that was not new at all. If you feel like I am been hard on Andy, let me send you the picture of the pulley party where we talked about my idea. Also look at my signature to see a few parts that I purchased from him then.

Any silicone hose will work with the SportBox.

Actually, we designed the box to deflect water at the box side - if you look at it with the top off, you will understand the design. The placement of the RAF works without question, as has been tested. What we found during the development was that small cracks, gaps, etc do not make a significant change to temps or pressure at speeds where the unit is effective. Below certain speeds, the difference is minimal - 25-30mph or so. As you climb in speed, there is a larger and larger difference.

I designed the RAF to use the most air and provide the largest gain possible considering all other design parameters. The stock intercooler cover acts as a ramp to the RAF and actually increases the velocity of airflow.

Our design is quite unique, and performs better than any other unit or prototype I have tested. It has the most volume, the largest filter area exposed to cold air, the biggest deltas in temp, and it fits over the ECU carrier with the ECU top in place. We are proud of it! It took a lot of work and development time, but the finished product is our own unique design built in house and delivers the best performance available.

Hope that helps!
Randy

AAAHHHH Your making these decisions harder and easier.
Either way I think that you have swayed my vote from many of the other companies to yours at sometime in the future.

No problem - we are working on offering a hose option, but the costs right now are too high. I'll probably end up with the Alta or Samco as a Webb Motorsports offered option...

Hope that helps!

WMS SportBox with JCW

Hey Randy,

You responded to my email about your SportBox with the RAF in my JCW. I appreciate the response, but realize I'm a dummy when it comes to this stuff. Have you installed any in a JCW? Could I expect to realize gains replacing the JCW CAI?

I really like all the details this thread has provided. I understand the SportBox is an improvement on stock, but does that still hold for the JCW? Everything sounds great, and I want to buy it, someone who has one, please reassure me

It absolutely works on the JCW! The JCW makes about 5 horsepower over stock, whereas the Sportox makes close to 10, and you can actually feel the difference. I drove both ways!

Thanks for the response, but I'm confused...the JCW kit makes about 40 more hp over stock, I have the entire JCW kit ($6000), so I"m wondering if this will be better in my setup. thanks!

We had the pleasure of having Lagston here at the shop over the last couple of days - and he did an outstanding job of blacking out my R56! He had a chance to check out the SportBox, and I appreciate his input - thanks.

I basically agree with what he posted - you will see a gain over the JCW box with our SportBox, though not as large as if you had gone from a stock box. The SportBox has a much larger intake opening even when compared with the JCW flap open. It also uses a larger, higher flowing filter element that is placed into the cowl area. In addition, when ordered with the RAF, the SportBox is the only cold air intake that uses ram effect air through the bonnet scoop. It is the most effective unit on the market, period.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hope that helps!
Randy

I received and installed the Webb Motorsport Sportbox CAI with RAF last Saturday.

Today was the first day of < 90 degree weather. The new intake certainly makes the car accelerate a lot better. My wife even commented on it after the first time she drove it.

I've yet to notice if I get an improvement in gas mileage since I tend to press the accelerator more to hear the sweet sound of the supercharger. There is quite a bit more pronounced supercharger whine when the engine is under load, but the sound seems about the same at cruising speed.

One question... Is it normal to hear a "puff" when I let up on the gas during a gear shift?

When you do the install does the electronic module on the drivers side keep the top on? I think it is the Alta with the intake top where you have to leave the top off of the electronics module. Never sounded like a good idea to me, so I am wondering how the SportBox handles that.

Yes, the ECU cover stays in place with our intake.

It can be, if what you are hearing is the throttle body closing. Does it do it everytime, or only under hard acceleration?

I only notice it under hard acceleration.

Yes. The Sportbox is big enough to contain the ECU with its top.

Brian,

Yep, I'd say it is normal then. Glad to hear you are enjoying the box!
