Direct Air Scoop for the Intake
All this talk lately about scoops and louvers etc has got me thinking...... the DFIC is a complete winner... a really great product...... why, because it turn the IC so it can take a direct hit of air and expell it.....why not a scoop for the intake..... surely there is a place on the bonnet where the air pressure/stream is right to take in massive amouns of fresh air ...... direct out of the engine bay.....away from any source of engine heat...... I am on a mission

Thats exactly where I was heading when I cut a hole in my hood just to the right and slightly behind the intercooler. Just have not had time to mock up a sealed box and figure out how to drain water out of it when it rains.(drill some holes in it I know) I do know that it has proven itself as a wonderful way of expelling hot air at a stoplight

I've already specced some 3" silicone brake duct hose and have been bouncing ideas around in my head for quite a long time. Basic and simple is to cut the stock location to size and fit a brake duct inlet scoop there. Simple cheap and not too difficult. I only haven't because I hate hacking up my car
Using the fog light holes leads to a far too complicated run.
Next best option is to simply extend the existing cutout and have it terminate just behind the front grill. You could easliy double the inlet size but you're still cramming it through the same base dimension at the support opening. It would help but isn't ideal.
If you want to start cutting into the hood then more optioins open up. Not for me thank you. Now Sid on the other hand...................

Let me throw in 2 cents - think old school "shaker hood"(of course it wouldn't shake). We just need a taller HDI with an air induction opening.

Which means that the engine has to be injesting some of that hot air when stopped. If this was more square and directly over the air box, it would be more effective. Not as nice looking though.

I was just out under the bonnet of my car and was thinking? Maybe this can work, But get away from the cone shape filter and go back to a flat panel! Then I pull the post up and whammo, Onasled post that picture. I also have been thinking about constructing the whole lot out of fiberglass as well. We may be on to something here.

IE: The hole in my hood, and the factory location by the grille. I came up with an idea for a enclosed box that would bring air from both locations. using a flat panel filter. Also I think if you can bring the air intake closer to the front of the car, you can get the expansion tank and power steering resovoir away from the exhaust manifold(occupy the original location of airbox.

I think we should start with a clean slate. I have removed the entire airbox assembly. Lower and upper. Wow we have alot of room once that crap is gone. oh yeah, a bracket has to be made to hold the ECU. I am also thinking combo air/air air water intercooling. I mean with the M7 VGS we can redesign everything from the intake to the intercooler to the intake manifold!!!!!!!! I think we are stuck on these cast intercooler runners. If we removed everything, someone has to be able to reinvent the wheel:impatient

For option 1 am I correct in assuming you are thinking about a some type of hose that may run to a lower grill in the bumper and then straight up to the airfilter? For example that is?
For option 2 I see where you want something cut into the bonet but I still have trouble seeing how something can be designed to use in the rain. I realize that you may custom make a plug but while driving down the road and gettin caught in the rain or being a moron like I tend to be and forget the special cover could be a costly issue.
Just curious about your thoughts.

If you take a HDI box and increase the sides so that the CAI box protrudes thru the hood (2" appr.) and add a fiberglass top with ram opening.
Something like the 455 transam 455 that it would rotated 180 degrees so the scoop faces forward or this mustang.

I was thinking something like this...

mated directly to the throttle body,
and an intake hose going in the top of it.
The intake hose would be positioned in such
a way that a corresponding hole/scoop in the
hood would mate to it when closed.
