what about something like this ?

http://www.sailorsams.com/mall/cowl_..._engine_ss.asp

some where over the CAI box ?

Pretty easy to install - 3" hole in the hood and then a 3" hole on the CAI box top.

That might be a winner.
You would just need to deflect water from the filter. This isn't as big an issue as some might think. Direct puddling may be an issue but some water drops on a filter are nothing. It's an oil soaked filter so it'll shed water and ingesting a bit of water mist isn't going to hurt a thing. Think free water injection

I'm all for putting a hole in your hood.

That looks pretty good. The pic is deceiving, looks a lot bigger than 3".

I see how it is now.

If we can all benefit from this brainstorming thread, then it's all good.

My question is about the scoop/vent that Bahamabart posted...

which way would be more effective? facing front? facing rear?
Facing rear would look kinda cool, like the old GTO's with hood mounted tach.

This is very rough, but it illustrates the idea, I think, for the ram scoop.

Will, are you saying that the curvature is important because it shouldn't be as "hard" as your illustration shows?

Not exactly. It needs to be experimented with for a variety of reasons. First, you are going to have that lower section behave like the top of a wing. The curvature and angle of a wing is very important. Too shallow a curve, and you will have separation. Too steep and you have separation. So you can't have a change of angle more than 10 degrees over a length. of course, that length depends on speed, so I'd say figure out the best curvature for 70 MPH, and it should have a good amount of coverage for average speeds. Obvioulsy change it for a race car, etc.

But it NEEDS to curve. If it's flat, the air will not turn correctly when it hits the rear of the intake, and you'll get a lot of backpressure. But if you use that surface to draw the air into turning, then you'll get it turning and spinning before it hits the curved back wall, and it will ram 180 degrees back and through the filter.

Do you have a starting point? maybe something we can build on?

I would but it would be much better accepted if MSFITOY did it . I'm a big fan of his work so I'm willing to buy the part as MY contribution.

From a plan or top view, do the side walls also have to be curved or can they stay flat for ease of fabrication. Also will the water trap as you describe also change the flow going into the filter? Finally is better to fab as large as a box as possible (volume)

Side walls can be flat. If possible, filet the corners to avoid sharp corners, they'll trap flow. The water trap at the bottom is like a cup, and it doesn't need to be as large as I've shown it. It's mostly there to catch the water that will be running down the back wall. You'd make a few small holes, maybe 1/8th inch, maybe 4 of them, and probably use a hose to drain the water all the way out the bottom. Volume of the chamber is good, the more you have, the better it'll be at pressurizing.

EDIT: man i thought this thread was dead, i post a reply,
and you guys are already into it.

I'm really thinking about trying this...

and modify the insides for a smoother air path.
Do you guys think it will be high enough to grab some air?
The website says the height is 3.25"

3.25 inches is plenty high, and there are ways you can make it better. But how wide is it?
