CAREFULL here - While pictures can be deceiving it doesn't look to be 3" high considering the width is 3.75 inches. I will see if my local boating store has one in stock and measure the height.

I'd aim for something in the 3" H by 6"-8" range. You don't want it to be too tall, because you'll introduce more drag, but too short and you won't grab air.

Take the back to front approach. Find out how big, in square inches, your panel filter will be. Then make sure that you have at least that many square inches of opening, but hopefully more.

And keep in mind that it doesn't have to be a panel filter. That was just easier to draw. Ideally, probably a cone filter is the better idea. Just set it back enough to not be in the downward airstream, to avoid water.

I just called sailorsams to confirm the dimensions. They said it looks to be correct. They will check with the manufacturer to confirm, maybe send more/different pics, and availability.

I think you could do it two ways... the way Bahamabart suggested, on the hood, right over the air box, extending down into or coming down right on the top of the box.
or, modify the insides to coincide with the way Will's illustration shows and go right into the throttle body with a filter in the middle.

Just got a reply back from sailorsams...

The measurements of 3 1/4 is the entire height of the cowl vent (top to
bottom)
1 5/8 is the measurement of the round base (but is included in the
entire
height measurement)
These are in stock, but they don't have any other picture then what we
have
on our site

hope this helps
Krsi

Looks like this one

is WAY too small.

1) I think its funny that Spidey wants an update on his own thread - made me laugh .

2) I think from a design concept point both are the same - Scoop to filter to TB. I have suggested using the stock / aftermarket CAI box and filter because I do not have the where with all to design a system. I can't even make a scoop hence the boat parts and that is why I taunt MSFITOY because he can make a scoop . Actually that is only one reason - clean garage, clean mini and no wippers are other factors.

3) Will who is in the business is thinking more from scratch. MMMh M7 New Scoop CAI?

What would I like to see (and I get to taunt MSFITOY) ? I'd like to see a narrower version of his IC scoop this way we keep some of the lines. Of course it would have to be re-angled to address that area of hood curvature. I don't think that I have stumped him, I assume that MSFITOY ran out of creative juice (beer) and has been busy hanging that dam ball

I'll be replacing my stock bonnet scoop with the M7/MSFITOY/JS Ram Air scoop. I might just modify the stock scoop to sit on the hood(narrowed to Will's 6"-8" dimension). As I mentioned before(not sure in this thread) I found a fellow MINI owner that lays carbon fiber, i'm pretty sure he can do fiberglass as well.

here's one for ya - my scoop blew off and so I had this bright idea to buy the DFIC not because you got an IC and scoop BUT because the scoop came with an IC.

Thats right I paid 899 for a scoop (I had already upgraded my IC)

back on topic - we are thinking a like here Perhaps the old M7 scoop (extreme) would work better ?

or perhaps

vertically mounted on the hood w/ scoops facing forward ? 4 3/8"W x 12 13/16"L x 7/8"D

yes more boat parts - lol

I'm like that little dog that waits for his master to fall asleep and then humps his leg.

The extreme would probably work better for grabbing the air.

Sid that design looks great.
Can I see it without the huge external flange?
I would want to use one with an internal flange to hide the mounting hardware/hole in the hood.
That is very close to a STI/early Trans Am shaker scoop.

How about this? taking this design but that it be front ended with your scoop? This is then mounted in the center (horizontally) of the MCS hood.

This might be considered a collaboration so you might want to poo poo this idea.

That flange would be particularly handy if you were mounting the scoop from the bottom. A wider flange will tend to crack less as well if you lay it on top and blend it in.

I can do just about anything for the Mini if only...I had surface data to mate my design up to...someday, my friend "in the business" will scan the whole thing then you'll start to see unbelievable things popping up from me

Possibility???

MSFITOY, how about a photoshop sketch. Air pickup point around headlight area - higher pressure area. Air can be routed internally on the underside of hood. This way the scoop could fit better to the disign of the Ram Air Scoop.

That would work. Whatever scoop we use(stock/M7 extreme) would have to be narrowed first, then fab Sid's design onto the back of it.

I probably won't mount it in the center, as we have the bump there.

Sweet! Now Joel's in on it.
Are you referring to the area just inside the headlight? It's kind of like a weird flat spot there?
I mentioned that earlier...you know great minds...
I'm not sure I follow about the scoop fitting better with the Ram Air scoop.

Sid thanks. That is perfect. Can you face off the front with a stock bonnet scoop or M7 extreme?
