Shifter BROKE!

Well i have a Alta Short shifter and the piece that's between the big pivot ball and the plastic thing broke.

I was putting the car into reverse and then all of the sudden, i had absolutely no response. When i lifter off the boot of the shifter, there was the piece hanging freely. So right now i only have 2 gears... 3rd and 4th. I called Alta but they are away at SEMA. (What bad timing) Well i hope they will replace the piece. The threading looks a little warped and i hope that's all i need.

Has anyone had the same problem?

Shin

ouch. i didn't know those things break.

hope you can get a hold of someone soon... perhaps one of the stores might be able to help you out with a warranty or something(?) not sure if there are such policies, but might be worth a try.

Ooops, sorry to hear about that Shin. Just got my MCS and thought about buying the Alta SS as one of the first mod Still would you recommend to buy one then? I guess that this is really a rare case?

Well, hope you get it fix soon. Good luck:smile:

Well i will have t see if i will recomned it after i find out what alta is going to do for me. Hopefully thiey can send that piece and it wont be a big deal. Ohther then that, i love it...

By the way if you want to have the shortest throws, you need to remove the bottom cover of the shifter box which means it supose to be cleaned everyonce in a while.

So are you still going to drive it around even though you only have third and fourth?

...which is why it's a good thing you don't live in a road salt area.

from what I remember when I installed mine, that piece is interchangable (so they can keep the same body and change the ball and socket pieces for the different model years). Unless you completely stripped the threads in the "big ball" (I think it is threaded) you should be able to put a new piece and motor away. Hopefully ALTA can hook you up. It has been my experience that they will stand behind their products.

Good Luck and keep us posted.

Hummm...i didn't get salt/dust up there. My car has the bottom
cover removed for the Helix shifter. I looked at it after winter. it was
clean. the exhaust heatshield covers it up real well.

If you're **** I guess you can close up the box using some aluminum
duct tape. you just need to make sure you provide enough clearance
from the heat sheild by bending the shield downward without it
rubbing against the midpipe.

you dont need thast piece that broke off.

all it is is a damper, (or reverse, i dont remember)the car will still go into all the gearsd without that connected, you just have to be careful where your putting the gearshift. (no speedshifting)

MINICOOPER,

You should be able to get one from (most) anyone that sell the Alta shifter and have Alta replace it to them. If I sold Alta and had one I would do it for good customer relations even if you didn't buy it from me.

I think it is necessary to go into reverse, 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th. otherwise you have control over only one cable.

As for replacing the part, i forgot if i need to jack up the car to screw the piece back in. can i do it from inside the car? its been over a year since i put the thing in. The large plastic piece is in the way but i might be able to work around it.

Thanks for the tip about getting the piece from were i bought it. It might work. i just have to find the site i bought it from.

And last, i think after i get everything working, i may take that bottom cover off if its not a problem.

Thanks everyone
Shin
