Drivetrain JCW exhaust installed, Vibration and Loud?
JCW exhaust installed, Vibration and Loud?
Hi everyone:
I just had my JCW works exhaust installed today, after the installation, first, I found it is a bit louder than exhaust (When you turn on your car, you hear "WHoooom....", which is much cooler than stock. But then the installer told me that he found that the JCW resonator is sticking with the center mount plate... Which will cause vibration... Ok, I then give it a try and it really gives vibration to my seat (Make you feel like your seat has the massage feature...). It feels ok at the beginning, but after past though a traffic, I found it starts to be annoying... :impatient
The garage guy told me that the JCW 's resonator is different than the stock one; the JCW one is curving to the bottom (touch that middle plate), but the stock is reverse.. (like mount on air...).
Do you know if this is normal or not? The exhaust was sold from a 2003 JCS owner and mine is a 2005...
Any information will be appreciate.
Btw, I do feel some performance gains after the JCW exhaust installed though.. Very nice.

It must be the change in hangers from 2003 to your car that is causing the problem - and I'm not sure what the installer did to make it that way
Anyway, I have a JCW with the current hanger set up on my 05 and no vibration. Sounds like he needs to hang it differently to compensate for the change - perhaps someone here can advise specifically how to do it right.
And yes, the resonator is completely different on the stock exhaust, doesn't even go in the same place. Is this guy familiar with Minis?

Thanks a lot, I am thinking that might be the problem... Since my JCW exhaust is used, it did not come with the JCW exhaust hangers... I am currently using my stock 05 hangers... Maybe that it why?
And do you think if I can purchase the JCW exhaust hangers from the dealer?
Thanks

Well, the JCW I got had the hangers integrated on, they were not seperate, I have no idea if you can purchase them individually and weld them on. I assume you have an MCS from the 'DS' in your name (for dark silver)? Just want to be sure we are talking about the same thing.
Sorry for the wrong words... Yes, I do have a 2005 Dark Silver Cooper S, what I meant was the "Plastic things" which hold the exhaust's hangers (Forgot what it calls.. )
Sorry for the confuse. :impatient

A small correction... The "plastic things" = gasket, and the middle plate is "cross-brace" which is now stick together with the exhaust Mid pipe... And the installer said the vibration may comes from it? They said I may need to have a different gasket or cross-brace??

Ask your dealer what you can do
Thanks, that was what I am thinking... I will contact the dealer to see what they can do... I really want to keep this exhaust though.

Problem fixed today! The problem was that installer (newbie) who turn the mid pipe upside down... Which made the mid pipe get in touch with the bottom part of the car.... to cause the vibration..!
Today they just turn the mid pipe and problem fix... But now the thing is... The JCW exhaust is even more quiet than my stock exhaust, but it makes the Rev goes smoother..
Thanks for all your helps, and sorry for the confuse again.

The JCW exhaust is VERY quiet. Quieter than stock. DO NOT think its not just as good, if not better, than any other aftermarket exhaust. Mike Cooper said he designed it that way on purpose because he wanted it "refined".

Thanks for your input. Yea, actaully I find now the RPM runs a bit smoother than the stock exhaust, but it seems that is has less pop pop sounds (but it is still there) and no more Whoom Whoom noise compare with the stock exhaust...
I really love the JCW exhaust, but not sure if it gives the similar HP as any aftermarket exhaust??
I can tell there is a performance gain, but not really sure how much does it help.
Thanks

Cool, now it makes me feel even happier with the JCW exhaust!
and another thing is, since the hanger of the 05 is different the pre 05, now I just use the outer hangers with the mount rubbers for the end pipe..(hope it makes sense), since the center hangers and mounts are not the same... (the hangers in better then 2 end mufflers...), which makes me scare about that they mufflers will fall down one day...
