Anyone else notice that aftermarket exhaust gets quieter over time?
I've had my Borla Race exhaust for about 6 months now and over the past few months I've noticed that it's significantly quiter than it was during the first few months. I actually loved the louder (but not too loud) sportier sound the first few months. I still am very happy with the exhaust, just wondering if this is some kind of normal "breaking in" or if I just got used to the sound (I don't really think so).
Yup, I noticed both. If I had to guess I would say that the aftermarket exhausts dull down a bit once you build up a good layer of grime, and the stocker gets louder as you burn out the fiberglass.... just my guesses.
I had my stock 03 exhaust on for 30000 miles, I liked it. Then the mod bog got a firm hold of me. I have almost 5000 on a milltek catback now, recently I sat in my car with the door open to hear the exhaust. Wow, the sound outside was so different from what I hear inside and running. With the door open I hear a sweet rasp, stoked. Inside I hear a louder tone at highway speed, step on the gas pedal and bark bark bark. I'm very pleased with the milltek, looks great and works better. When I got the millek I realized the stock system had drone. Bout your exhaust, I would contact the manufacturer for advise.
I have the quicksilver exhaust on for about a year and a half and I believe the exhaust has gotten substantially quieter in the past 6 months. Or maybe I've gotten really really used to it. I know that when the exhaust is really heated up from running the absolute crap out of the engine, it still screams.
Oh and as for the first week I had the exhaust, it was very apparent when the break-in process stopped because it was initially much louder too. Man i love my exhaust!!!

You might just be gettin use to the exhaust tones while driving? I dont think the exhaust would get any more quite, i would think it would get louder. Maybe over time when the cat starts to get clogged it would get quite but that would be a car with alot of miles on it, or a car that has been runing leaded fuel.

If the quietness is due to some kind of builds up, you have way more porblems than just the exhaust. I'd bet you're getting used to it or your hearing is on the way out! Wasn't there something about the hearing being the second thing to go? Hmmmm?
If you listen to a stock exhaust then get back in yours you will realize you're just used to it.

Exhausts get louder over time... and one can count oneself lucky if the level of noise, and tonal quality stay basically the same. The reality is that the sound deadening materials become compromised over time and let progressively more sound pass through the system.
I find it encouraging that you find your Borla to be more "mellow"... even more quiet... and possibly "gentler".
I am happy for you that you continue to be happy with it...
Borla Sport here...
Exhaust shouldn't get "quiet", not enough grime can build up to restrict flow let alone dampen the sound.
Here is my thought:
When I met my wife, I listened to everything she said and could hear each and every word clearly...now that she's been around for 50k (or 5years in non MINI speak) it's just background noise and I don't seem to hear her as clear.
I'm just guessing you're getting used to the sound...hit the gas, it will get louder

The person who installed my Borla has been in the same spot for 40 years and he knows his stuff. He told me that all exhausts get a slight carbon build-up within the first few months - nothing bad, just the fact that exhaust is running through it. I was worried about the "tin" sound and he told me that it will go away. He was right. I hated the sound of the Borla at first but now it sounds much nicer with no tin-can sound.
Had my Magna Flow Exhaust on for 3K miles. I think it sounds better. Keep the back seats down and windows open--when you can. Better yet--let someone else drive the car and stand next to the road and hear what others hear. My neighbors advise me they like the exhaust notes a lot better than my straight pipes Loud Mouth exhaust on my 01 Vette that left when BUD arrived.
