Putting 2011 MC S Engine in 2008 MC S
All --
I don't expect any issues, but I wanted to see if anyone had any cautionary tales or advice to share on dropping a 2011 MC S engine into a 2008 MC S? I am taking the engine and transmission as a unit and ECU from the 11 to put in the 08.
Donor car is: WMWSV3C50BTY22203 -- 2011 MINI Cooper Hardtop 2dr Cpe S -- Turbo
Patient is: WMWMF73598TT86702 -- 2008 MINI Cooper Hardtop 2dr Cpe S -- Turbo
Thoughts?
Thanks,
John

It won't be plug and play as the Keys and other computers from your car will NOT communicate with the ECU from the donor car. We get asked about this swap often, and it is cheaper and 100 times easier to just go back with another N14 rather than going to the N18 engine.

Have you seen the engine in the donner car? An N18 will have a cover over the ignition coils on the spark plugs; the N14 will not. The N18 started with model year 2011, but not sure what month. You could go to REALOEM.COM and see where they show when the change occurred. A production date of 11/10 is late in the start of the production year. My 2012 was ordered in late Aug 2011 and delivered in Oct 2011, so your date is about 2 months into the run.
A fun option might be is to get a N14 JCW engine and ecu as those ran through the 2012 models (I think. The N14 did run more years in the JCW than in the S) .

Well, now my brain really hurts. The patient (bad) engine does not have a cover over the ignition coils on the spark plugs and the donor engine does indeed have a cover over the ignition coils. But based on the numbers on the donor car engine block -- V757899480 -- this should be an N16 non-turbo engine if I am reading all of the guides correctly. Maybe they used the same older block for later N18 builds? Oyy. I'm just not sure. So just FYI, there was absolutely NOTHING on the donor engine that did not hook up effortlessly on the patient car. All of the connections were exactly the same. We had the engine out of one car and in the other car in about 2.5 hours. We are transferring over the ECU and other computers from the donor car now. All I can say is, stay tuned!
