From what I'm seeing it looks like the BSH cans are not catching much at all, at least not in stock form. I average about 3/4 of a gallon of stuff every 5,000 miles. Of that, at least 1/3 is oil. I really recommend extending the inlet hose to allow for more condensation. Check out my thread for info.

Check out the 42 Draft Design OCC. IMHO it has a much better baffle design and inlet/outlet hose placement then the BSH.

For those with the catch can...have you noticed the odor coming into the cabin with the heat on (near firewall mount)? It's been very noticeable as of late. It's strong enough so that you can smell it outside of the car as well (after it's been run).

I wouldn't have expected any odor, given the negative pressure...

I installed the catch can when I had 50 miles on the car. Right now I am at close to 7,000. Have never noticed any smell whatsoever and it's mounted in the standard close to the firewall location. Any possible loose connections?
Good luck.

Check if the allen plug is tight and that nothing is leaking out across the bottom of the OCC. We the plug was not tight on the one that we had on our "company car" and we smelled a little odor after it leaked onto some hot engine components.

After we tightened the plug and cleaned off the can, no smell . . .

Haven't noticed any odor yet, mounted it in the Alt. location at the front next to the windshield washer tank.

Thanks for the responses guys. Everything is fastened and sealed 100% so far as I can tell/see. I took special care with everything. I will look at it again this weekend and report back.

Regarding the oil smell, I have some oil seepage around the boost tap. It looks like the o-ring inside got deformed a little, maybe during initial installation it got unseated a little. I also get trace oil seepage around the inlet tube and turbo connection, which ends up smelling like hot oil during harder driving conditions.

Interesting. I sealed the port for the boost tap so that should not be a concern. I will look over everything tomorrow again.

To be on the safe side, take a real close look at the oil feed line on top of the turbo. Apparently turbo heat is causing the seal to leak to the extent that BMW has issued a clip on heat shield for that seal!

The oil line uses a copper washer so I don't see how it would be effected by temperature. Do you have any more info on this? I had a bit of seepage once, but that's just because I left it loose after reinstalling my turbo. I re-torqued and now it's dry.

I don't believe this is the case. The smell is definitely that of combustion bi-product that is in the catch can. I'll take a close look though and thanks for pointing that out.

Sorry I didn't mean the boost tap(s), I meant those 2 rubber O-rings near the allen bolt block off, those are warped on mine.

I have my OCC mounted to the firewall also and when my OCC gets kind of full I can start to smell it as you described. Even though I don't like the smell it does let me know that the can is getting full so it does not fill up.

Additionally, this only happens when it is really hot outside, so usually in the summer. I have emptied my OCC out recently and did not notice any leaks at all. Maybe it's just normal occurrence for this to happen given outside temperatures .

Last time I Seafoamed my Mini, I noticed that one o-ring on the boost tap was completely ripped in half. I have been meaning to replace it.

Does anyone know the size of the o-ring or know if we can get extras from BSH?

I'd ping Justin at BSH and ask what he can do for you on that front. They do their manufacturing in-house so they should be able to provide spares/replacements.

A quick question for those of you that have the BSH CC. Does anyone know if the 42DD CC quick drain tap will fit into the drain hole for the BSH CC? That would make draining my can alot easier.

Not an answer to your question, but my $0.02. I'd drain it with a syringe and a tube through the dipstick hole. Cheaper and easier.

I installed my new CC and BPT last night, I did the normal instalation with a very short tube going to the Catch Can. However I thought about what Tintman said about using a longer tube in order to increase the amount of condensation, so I made some changes today.

It doesnt look as good, but I think it may work better, what do you all think?

Seems a bit excessive to me.

I'd just go with the normal length of hose, then disconnect the 'out' hose from the catch can after a couple weeks and make sure it's dry.

If you think that is excessive you should look at Tintmans install, he has like 14 feet of hose going all around his engine bay. I was concerned about what 09mellow said about how his hotside hose had oil in it even after the CC instal, and I had mine installed just like his. So it seems that the short hose method doesnt work.

My can only has about a foot of hose between it and the valve cover, and the outlet hose is perfectly dry (the inlet hose definitely is not). Then again, I am using the 42dd can and I have it on the passenger side hose path… so, not quite apples-to-apples.

I'd still say try a normal length of hose first and see what your results are. No sense creating hose intestines just because one guy on the internet says his was oily once.

Yes I think the 42 dd can looks to have better baffles, they have three horizontal instead of one vertical.

I don't know if the smell I've been noticing lately is any different than the one some of you have posted earlier, but here's my deal....

Ever since installing my BSH OCC and boost port plug on my 2010 R56, my garage always seems to smell like burnt oil after parking it in the garage following a drive. I've checked everything physically possible looking for any sort of leak to any degree. Everything is spot on, no leaks anywhere...but still a smell of burnt oil in my garage. The smell dissipates, but park it in the garage after driving the car a bit (just regular driving even), close the door, and my garage stinks.

So is anyone else dealing with this sort of thing, or is it just my car and me? Like I said, zero leaks from anywhere around the connections, boost tap, OCC. I'm mystified why my car stinks like this now.
