Possible to make an 03 exhaust pop like an 05-06?

I know this is a weird question, but.

Is it possible with possibly a later ECU flash / JCW to make an 02-04 car pop like an 05-06 car?

From what I have read it is the ECU programming retarding timing on decell from 3000 under?

Thanks!

Earlier ECU's were Bosch and the newer are Siemens so there might be tune compatibility issue

I like how my car has never had the burble/pop. I found it annoying in the '06 loaner I had for a while. Any time you let off the gas, instead of a beautiful symphonic sound from the engine it gave me a mess of wet fart.

Just a guess here, but a custom ECU tune could probably be engineered to induce an engine burble.

I have a 04 that pops like no other in the winter time but quiet as heck in the summer.

Mine did it more in the winter when I had a one ball and factory header. Then I got a catless megan header with an M7 exhaust it was like cannon and gun shots and bit of a scooby boxer tone to it then the short lived alta before the resonator melted internally after 5-10k miles it sounded pretty deep and throaty and then my current exhaust borla race when it pops it sounds like its hitting a metal wall but low rpm coasting is a grumble that doesn't sound like a inline-4 oh and all of them have been LOUD

Stop rubbing it in

Basically i was curious if a 05-06 JCW reflash for larger injectors and airbox (of course after installing 380cc injectors) would mimic this.

I can't see it being a limit of the ECU type as they are merely just values for decell timing from what I understand (although I am certainly no expert!)

Has anyone heard a 02-04 with a 05-06 JCW reflash?

Perhaps Jan or Mynes can let me know if they could amplify the pop/burble in their tunes?

I would guess the ecu type would be a factor because just like computer hardware driver its all specific. By that I mean 02-04 JCW or not may have specific tunes being BOSCH and then the start of the burble and pop feature in 05- on to the 07 cabrio JCW or not being Siemens. I could be wrong but that would be my logical guess seeing how there was 2 brands of ECU run in the R53 in its lifetime.

You can. The DINAN tuning flash on my 02 made my car pop even more than the later model years. You can also get the JCW ECU flash with the 380cc injectors and it'll do the same burble/pops as well. With a header, it's extremely pronounced....mine sounds like gunfire now. ROFL!

My '02 does the same thing. When weather is cooler, it pops quite nicely. I originally thought it was an A/C thing because it coincides with the temperature at which I turn the A/C off but it is definitely temperature related in the early cars.

I have a one-balled exhaust, and it does indeed amplify the burble, but I am looking for the more defined snap/pop of the 05-06, I guess a JCW/RMW/Mynes tune is in order for that...

The burble is something that is ECU dependent. The ECU controls the fuel flow. So by allowing the fuel to flow a bit past throttle off the burble is created. I am not sure if any of the tuners can recreate this or not, but definitely ask them.

As for the cold cars doing it.......the car runs real rich until warm, thus you get some fuel in the exhaust and the burble.

My wife bought a new '03 MCS and her only complaint was "It's too @#*&! quiet!" (Love that gal!) A MAGNAFLOW exhaust cured that and, when backing off the throttle, gave her car the nicest, deep-throated burble imaginable. I can hear her coming home a block away.

Can anyone confirm what has been stated yet?
I.e, timing retard, JCW tune, etc?

Buy my straightpipe exhaust with boomstick for $150,,, It is the BEST sounding exhaust hands down! Ask alpha motoring... it burbled and popped like no other! and sounded like a lambo or exotic. NO EXAGGERATED

I have an April 04 build MCS. Had the JCW kit installed in 2006, latest kit with the CAI 210hp. Looking at the installation instructions it shows different flash numbers for the Bosch and Siemens ECU's. I have confirmed from the BMW diagnostics readout that the correct flash number was done for my model year. Would also like to have more pop, crackle and burble, thought the JCW would add some but it is not the case. I do not know if the later flash can be done on the earlier ECU, it would have been simpler to have one flash for all JCW's so I guess BMW must have a reason, maybe it is just not compatible.

If the AC is on I can forget popping. When the AC is switched off I can with carefull throttle manipulation create some nice pops and deep burbling on the overrun. Not as pronounced, crisped and easy to provoke on the later cars. Maybe the AC compressor acts as a 'brake' and the engine does not spool down as quickly when lifting on the overrun.

I am also not sure if later model JCW's pop/burble the same, less or more than the stock cars. Some folks have made the comment that the JCW conversion made their cars quieter than stock ito pop/burble. Like the sound of the JCW catback under accelleration though!

Mine was built in May of 2004. The update took place July of 2004. 2 more months I missed my burble by

Same. I can get some slight burble but only with careful throttle manipulation while free-reving. Otherwise, non-existent

I must find a way!
