Oh boy, cleaning the remote shifter is fun!

So I've been doing some general maintenance recently on the Mini, bled the brakes, and clutch system. Tore off the carb and manifold and replacing gaskets and cleaning up the carb. Grounded down the manifold and painted her black to clean it up a little!

But I decided to tackle the remote shifter, unbolted her and found this!

It had about 1/2" of grim, dirt, grease, oil, sludge, rock, everything inside there!! Reminded me that i need a solvent tank HORRIBLY! Everything on this car has so much grime on it!

Blasted it with de-greaser and some elbow grease and after about an hour of scrubbing on it got it to this point

Still needs alot of cleaning, I think I'm going to bring it to the local garage to see if they could run it through the tank for a little bit for me.

Also ordering a new shifter bushing for the bottom of the shifter, as well as a pivot bolt flange bushing, and a new half moon plug so it wont get nasty again

What a mess! You been off roading with your precious?

In the first picture, is that part of you in the lower left corner or did you spill something while painting your calipers?

I got the car from Wyoming, so they might have in the past

Thats from my wife spilling her nail polish. She was painting her toe nails in the garage while I was working on my car

Good deal. So, any other day it would have landed on the brand new white chenille carpet?

Those can get pretty nasty inside, especially if the front rubber half moon seal is missing or rotted away.

Here is something you might want to do, add grease fittings. Also hit the shifter casing with a wire wheel on the drill. Will look brand new!

Thanks for the pointer Pat! Does the case have to be fun of grease? Or just regularly greased?

No, just the two places that the shift rod makes contact with case. Greasing it just helps with the wear at those places

remote shifter cleanout

Mine looked just like that except after sitting for 10 years or so, it had seeds and nut shells and a field mouse nest!

I don't have a remote shifter. I just have a rod going from the shifter to the trans... is that normal?
