Radar Detecters In Virginia

This might be common knowledge but a quick reminder. Radar detecters
are illegal in Virginia whether they are turned on or not. The police will
confiscate them if they see one. Just put it out of sight and turned off.

Absolutely true as well as in other states.. Also, NC is notorious for setting up roadblocks and doing random car searches, I don't know their policies regarding radar detectors, but I am aware they frown on funny shaped cigarettes, etc.. be forewarned.. usually they are right after an exit.. look sreally bad when you roll up on one and turn around to go the other way..
Just be cooperative, polite (not obvious "***-kissing" polite, just polite) and do as they say.. you'll be fine

The most effective radar deterent on the market is this..

NOT True. Radar detectors are ONLY illegal in VA (and DC). They are legal in the other 49.

sorry.. thinking of "jammers"...

"The use of an active radar jammer is illegal anywhere in the United States and may carry stiff fines and or jail time. However, there are no Federal laws against the transmission of infrared light which is what laser jammers use. For this reason, LASER JAMMERS are legal in every state except California, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah, Virginia and Washington DC ... these states have specifically banned all jammers."

but some states, if I'm, not mistaken, it's not illegal to have them installed, it is illegal to have them running... I may be mistaken, but I thought that was the case..

oh and commercial vehicles... here's the best list I found online..

courtesy of: http://www.afn.org/~afn09444/scanlaws/radar4.html
  1. District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.) - (1995 law, still effective 2003) - RADAR-detectors are illegal.
  2. Illinois - (2002 law) - Not regulated in passenger vehicles, but they are illegal used in commercial motor vehicles over 26,001 pounds (which is redundant legislation, since Federal law already makes that illegal in any U.S. state for vehicles over TEN-thousand pounds, anyway; BUT, some states like to have it in their lawbooks so that they can charge added fines and penalties that would go to the state).
  3. Minnesota - (2002 law) - Radar detectors not specifically regulated, BUT - hanging things from windshields not permitted. If one were to put two and two together, then this would supposedly include radar-detectors if they were hung from the windshield. However, I suppose one could also infer that they would be okay if simply rested upon the top of the dashboard. The law does not specify that it is not. So...
  4. New York - (2002 law) - For motor vehicles over 18,000lbs, and any other commercial vehicle over 10,000lbs, RADAR-detectors are illegal. [This is already covered by Federal law, as well.]
  5. Virginia - (2002 law) - Use is illegal.

Correct RADAR jammers are illegal because you are transmitting and that is controlled by the FCC and hence a Federal Offense. Uh oh

Yup, actully there is a really convoulted loop hole where you can have them and get away with it because its FDA controlled but I get lost everytime some tries to explain it to me, I figure its not worth it and its just smarter to behave and hope they use radar in case youhave temporary slip-up.

From the first webpage that let me copy I can get more sources if you need

Jammers and the Law
One question that we are frequently asked "isn't jamming laser against federal law?" No it isn't. Laser is a beam of light and laser is regulated by the FDA. Currently there is no federal law prohibiting you by owning what amounts to "a brighter beam of light then the cops have".
However, some states have enacted their own laws and laser jammers are illegal in the states of Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois and Washington DC.

not too sure how an IR jammer would do a darned thing to a RPG
since RPG are normally unguided munitions!!

(or are you saying you put IR jammers on RPGs??)

you are correct that RPG's are unguided.. you got me there.. I'm talking about MANPADS though.. those are shoulder fired missiles that ARE guided.. it's just most people don't know what a MANPADS systems is.. usually I get asked if its some sort of Men's diaper as a joke..LOL!

Here's the press release for one of the programs I work on..
http://www.na.baesystems.com/releasesDetail.cfm?a=384

which is a modified for commercial flight version of a system that I also build for another program called ATIRCM..

this is my "baby" right here.. we always wanted to sneak one out and mount it to the hood of my old MINI for a joke picture, but that probably wouldn't go over to well with the customer..LOL!

you can always get a CB and listen to the truckers...but there's the issue of the huge, unsightly antenna, among other negatives.
I don't use ours on the way down, but I do watch how fast the trucks are going. If they're zooming along on I81, then so am I...risky, but it's the closest I can come to a fuzzbuster.

yeah.. that's actually a really good gauge... also, I used to have a sign that read "Mind if I draft off your tail?".. usually they'd nod and I'd draft 'em for quite a while, they like it if you let them know you're back there and that you're not a cop..LOL!
