ElectricalFor discussions regarding wiring up electrical modifications such as radar detectors, brake light mods, power sockets, and driving lights in Cooper (R50), Cabrio (R52), and Cooper S (R53) MINIs.
I have an Escort Passport 8500 X50 Radar Detector & I'm trying to find a mount for it. The one that came with it cannot be utilized due to the rake of the Mini's windshield(2003 MCS).
If you have this particular model, what are you guys using?
My first preference is a mount for the rear view mirror.
I've mounted it up by the rear view mirror with the suction cups and routed the wire through the headliner and down to the power source. I've also done this directly above the steering wheel on the highest point of the windshield by the headliner and routed the wire the same way. Both have been good ways for me. See the cups and mount that I'm talking about below.
My Passport Max fits up in my field of view at the top right next to the rear view mirror. I stick my suction cup on real good, and then I slide the detector onto the mount. My mount has "notches" in it. I slide it on til the back unit touches the wind screen and then let it click into place. It doesnt need to be seated all the way back on the suction cup mount (unless older models dont have this adjustability on the mount?) and then I hardwired it into one of my map light switches (since they dont get used) and if I leave it on the map light circuit turns off when I lock the car. (05 MCS with the E46 style key, 3 button)
Still too much rake when I try to attach to the top of the windshield.
The search continues
You can't adjust the angle by sliding the detector in and out of the suction cup mount? You can always bend the mount where it slides into the detector (outside of the detector or you will snap the plastic)
I would try bending it to the perfect angle or aligning it on the clip. If you need me to take a pic of what I mean by adjusting on the clip lemme know.
While I personally can't attest to the fitment in a Mini, I have a friend that had one in his Vette and the fit/finish was awesome. I'll be picking one up when I finally get around to picking up a radar detector this summer.
My Escort 8500 mounted fine next to the mirror. I did bend the mount to the correct angle. I have it pressed lightly against the mirror to eliminate vibration. I can use the two individual suction cup mount or the super cup mount (currently installed). I also routed a power wire through the headline, A-Pillar, and down to fuse box.

I'm resurrecting an older thread but I am having the same issue: too much rake using the suction cup mount. I looked in to the BlendMount, which looks awesome, but cannot verify the fitment around the post to the mirror. /the pics show what looks like an R56 mirror (switches above the mirror) so I can't tell for certain.
Has anyone else used this mount in their R53? I'd like to use this product as it's top notch and made in the USA to boot.
Cravenspeed has a nice mirror mount....
But I always used a suction cup mount that came with my 8500....
Just find a nice way to run the wires, and pick your spot....
Lower for Lazer, higher for radar...
