New to MINI, not new to engines
Hello everyone. My wife and I just picked up a 2011 Mini Cooper Hatch (75k, leather, heated seats, auto-unfortunately) in pepper white. Scored a great deal on it but it’s got a pretty good knock. We knew when we got it. I plan to pull it apart and fix it myself.
Glad I actually found a forum with some depth and activity.
Currently waiting in a book for her with specs, etc. I figured I’d start out with checking compression, leak down test before I open her up. Any advice for a first time Cooper owner?
Congrats on your purchase.
You should keep an eye on the oil level. Mini's of your year use 5W30. Mini's are prone to burning oil. Buy extra and top it off before it gets low.
Also, you may want to do a timing chain replacement (Mini's have interference engine).

Welcome. The N18 is a pretty good engine so it's rare for it to have a knock like that, hope it isn't something bad but you won't know till you open it up. Hope we can help when you start needing parts.
Question-
According to the service manual by Bentley Publishers, my n/a 2011 is a N16 and the S model is an N18. Can anyone else verify this?
