Week 23 2008 Support Group
I think something more happened and they are not telling you. what if there was major damage and down the road you have many issues with Ziggy. I would get all the information and make a decission with all the facts. I would be concerned long term effects.
If they are talking about replacing a whole car for a 3" scratch, I would think if something more had happened, that they would just say it. if they are going to all the effort anyway......
I can see why it seems sketchy, but I just think why bother telling someone your replacing their car for a 3" scratch, when the real reason is something else like, the top got crunched and they *fixed* it and didn't disclose it.

Hopefully my faithful ask MINI rep does the digging like she said. The whole thing is weird. I also question what really happened and don't like that I don't have a choice and the dealer was adament that it was a 3" scratch- I also asked why if BMW was that worried about it, why the couldn't replace the hood/bonnet and dealer guy said something about the serial numbers wouldn't match- which still doesn't seem like a good reason to replace a car.... I'll keep you all posted.
it still it is your choice. you own the car. you have no obligation to the dealer.. The dealer does not have the title anymore. The only person you have to think about is the lien holder.
The serial numbers not matching on the bonnet as an excuse??.... THAT seems more sketchy to me, that sounds like some sort of con to me. I think the whole think is sounding REALLY sketchy on the dealers part..... I would only speak with ASK MINI about it... I don't have a lot of trust in people, and to me your dealer is starting to sound like they are up to something.
Dealer has no claim on your car. Find out from ASK MINI whats up, don't listen to the dealer.

I'm convinced now that they are totally up to something...before I thought playing devils advocate was okay, thinking that they would tell you if something really bad was wrong...maybe it really was the 3" scratch thing... but the more I think about it, and with the "not matching serial" the more convinced I am that they are scamming......or doing something fishy... I don't like it.
maybe Ziggy is full of cash or diamonds and that's why they need it back.
Start looking!
( just trying to make you smile
, I can imagine your stress...)

The body panels carry the VIN. If the VIN is not on the panel, the assumption is that the panel was replaced as the result of an accident. It reduces the value of the vehicle.
I have read elsewhere, but cannot source, that the VDC is considered to be part of the factory, so "adjustments" are considered part of the "production process" not repairs.

If you recall, on last week's episode of Doctor Who, it was revealed that the Doctor had succeeded in getting a Dalek drunk while in the TARDIS and was about to unzip his...................<signal interrupted by unknown interference>

so replacing the hood in that circumstance would not be a problem. There would be documentation that it was "production process" there wouldn't be any assumptions....
I just think the dealer is up to something. If ASK MINI can't come up with any reasonable answers, I would be keeping Ziggy and never speaking to that dealer again.

I'm in Doctor Who withdrawals.
Well I admit I had trouble falling asleep last night but I feel better today- either way I have my car- JOKINGLY I told my boyfriend I would he holding a shotgun when the delivery truck pulls up if they try and take it- again, I am kidding. I also can't figure out- what would they do with Ziggy? Re-sell it? Scrap it? (GASP!)

I am sure "Ziggy II" is very excited to know he will be getting a good home with you. "Ziggy I" is not gonna be dismembered or crushed. In all likelihood, he will be detailed up and sold to a new MINI lover with the proper disclosures and at a good discount. You may actually be responsible for providing a MINI to someone who might not otherwise be able to afford one. (Compassion for those less fortunate than us is a virtue!)
And please forgive me for renaming your MINIs, but this is something that will have to be done eventually.
I realize you may be attached to "Ziggy I", but I see it as a 'blessing in disguise'. There is a reason why BMW is doing this, and as a fellow MINI owner, I am heartened to know that they are taking this action on their own. (and to tell you the truth, I always suspected there was a problem involving your car when I read that **** & bull story about delivery to the wrong port)

No. Piano Black, which is what I understand MINI installs if you have the HIFI stereo. There are some threads on the forum where this is discussed, and I think a few people were able to convince their dealers to order the chrome rings for the front speakers since the MINI configurator shows the speaker rings as chrome. But I think they also come in Piano Black if you ordered the Piano Black trim for the dash (which I did)
I like chrome so I wish I had them, but I'm too lazy to make a fuss. (and having too much fun with the car anyway!)

Okay, i COMPLETELY blame my pain meds but... I just tried to unlock my back door by putting the key fog into the key slot. I'm glad no one was around to see, cause i'm sure my face was redder than a cherry tomato.
Here's what i think happened. The 3" scratch was down to bare metal (requiring fill) and repainted. Since it was down to the metal, the bonnet now has an increased chances of rusting or the damage being revealed prior to expiration of the rust warranty. Now if that happened and you found out what they did and that they didn't inform you, they think you'd have a legal grounds for a suit.
Mostly likely, they'll use it as either a loaner or a tester if they don't scrap it first like I've heard they do with damaged MINIs.

weird situation with ziggy. See if you can find out what the situation is, but don't complain. There must have been some larger issue at hand here.
I'm thinking that the owner of the dealership found out what had happened with the car getting to a different port, dug deep and found out about the scratch. He probably figures that there might be more then meets the eye then just the scratch, so he requested a new mini, and you're getting it. It saves both you and him the headache of finding out about more major problems down the line. If corporate mini pays for it, it's less that he has to put out to service it.
