16" wheel suggestion?
I'm getting my MCS-but I'm not crazy about the v-spoke on the stock 16 inch MCS, or the 17 inch MCS option in the Sport package....so I've narrowed down my 16 inch wheel choices (based on looks) to the following 3 options:
-OE 16 inch 5 star (R83) wheels (normally comes w/ MC Sport package).
-Moda R2 16 inch
-Borbet type B
Anyone have suggestions between these? Weights are similar (19-21 lbs), Costs are similar.....so to me it's basically bild quality&look?

I would say the quality between the Moda and the Borbet are very close, both are gravity cast. Its a matter of cosmentics at this point. I personally use type B's for my winter setup. Its a matter of what you like.

Have you seen the pics of ficcion's rota wheels? They look beautiful, are light, and very inexpensive. I hadn't considered them 'till seeing them on a mini. See this thread for pics & info.

Hey Dan, what are your thoughts on the Kosei K1's. They seem to be such a great wheel at a great cost. Also, I have a question for you, I wanted the 16's, but also wanted to go with a 215 tire (or as big as will fit with no rubbing) do you have any suggestions? I've been looking at the Falken's because a friend has him on his autox car and they are amazing, but I'd love to just order the wheel with tires mounted from you guys so as to not have to worry about it, and unless I'm mistaken, aren't you guys at Tirerack the only ones who carry Kosei's? Oh well, thanks for any help you can offer.
I was reviewing the 17" tire weights listed, Dan, and was very interested to see how comparably light the stock Dunlop run-flats are.
From all the magazine write-ups testing the Cooper S with the optional 17" wheels, a common complaint is the weight of the run flats. Yet in your comparison, these Dunlops with the run flat technology are among the lightest. The same tire without the run flat technology appear to be the lightest of the bunch.
I was also surprised to see how heavy the Kuhmo tires are - 2 to 3 pounds heavier than the Dunlop run flats.
I am looking for a set of wheels and tires for my car to use on track days. I had in mind to run the Kuhmo MX's, or perhaps the Hoosier race tire, along with either Kosei K-1s or BBS RK wheels.

Should have my 16x7 Rota Circuit 8 - 205/50-16 Toyo T1S Proxes pkg. from RSpeed this week (Thanks Peter!!). 35lbs/corner and as I've mentioned in a few other posts, I'm convinced this is one of the best all-around set ups for 95% of us MCS folks. At app. $1150 shipped, one of the best deals around as well. I did exhaustive research and my other choice was the Kosei's w/ Bridgestone RE730's from TireRack (sorry, Dan).
To go substantially lighter (3lbs./corner) will set you back another 50%. More aggressive tires will probably just make you want to trailer home from the track and dread rain.............

Kumho uses some of the widest casings on the market, that accounts for much of the weight. You can see this in their entire line.

I am running SSR Competions with Yoko A520s (with very little tread left) and the weight is 27 lbs per corner vs. 43 lbs with the stock 16" rims w/run flats. I am a facist when it comes to light wheels and tires. Wheel price vs weight is a slippery slope and there are no really light, inexpensive wheels. The best cost to weight, IMHO, are Rotas and Koseis. For tires- weight vs grip- Toyo has some of the lightest tires (T1S), they give great grip but the sidewall is not very stiff and may give squirmy turn-in. Falken Azenis stick like glue but are very heavy. Once I sell the Kuhmo V700s I will go with Yoko ES100 giving up some grip for a decrease in unsprung rotational mass.
In addition, I want to thank Dan for the info in switching my rims and tires from my Miata to the Cooper.

- Enkei RP-F1 - nice looking wheel and light, about 13lbs...fairly low priced.

- Alt Litespeed - about 16lbs for 16"...not super light, but attractive and low priced.

- Volk SE37K - forged ultralight...11lbs per wheel. Pricey tho!

- Volk CE28n - forged ultralight...11lbs per wheel. Pricey also.

- Work Emotion CR - about 14lbs for 16x7. Hard to get and very rare wheel. Work quality is right up there w/ Volk. Medium priced.

205/50/16 has been the hot ticket for this car. Its sligly smaller diameter helps liven up 1st gear! its also lighetr than 215's. Kosei's are a great value, and rather light. 2minis posted here withy K1's. I also Beleve DID runs them aswell with great sucess.

I think the K1's and the Rota's are one of the better exceptions to that rule :smile:
I put the 215/45/16 Falkens Azenis - Rota Circuit 8 combo on the scale and was getting high 35's(lbs.).
For simplicity lets say 36 lbs. a corner. Back out the rota wheel at 15.5 or 15.8 lbs. and that puts the Falken at 20.2 to 20.5 lbs. I have seen another post where the Falken was mentioned at 21 lbs. so as you can see these numbers are close but not exact.
But close is all I need...and I still got money in my pocket
