949 and 6UL

This was posted over on Miata.net.
https://www.949racing.com/product/17x8-6ul-4x100/

Near the bottom of the page you can select what car you have -for the center bore I suspect. I have an R53 and an ND2. Both have 4x100 but the center bores are slightly different.

Yeah, Mini bore is slightly larger. I think 17x8 is too wide for R56/55/58. I would like a 17x7.5 option, but the 8 inch width is ideal for the Miata platform.

These would be good for either the 225-45x17 or the 215-40x17 tires. It would depend on what one is doing with the car. The 225s would be good for an effectively taller gear ratio and vice versa for the 215.

The offset is ET38, which would put it about right for either generation. I have put 225-45x17 tires on 7” wheels with ET38 offset on my R56 and had some rubbing on the inside of the wheel well arch. Hit the plastic, not the metal. These wheels would center the tire the same, so the issue might be what the added 0.5” width at the wheel would do up at the tread area. If anything, a little more camber in the rear would help that to clear.

I would love to see these in a 5 bolt pattern for my F56 JCW….

These used to be a good pound or two lighter but they had issues with them breaking in a catastrophic manner so they pulled them from the market for a good long time as they searched for a new manufacturer.

15 pounds for a 17x8 is still very nice.

Well that would suck!

A driving school I regularly attend warns that wheels are a “wear” item and may crack over time. I expect “time” to longer vs shorter. I would guess this issue was a “shorter” time? I look over my track wheels regularly just for that reason. The Enkei Racing wheels have held up really well in that respect. As for these replacement wheels, I wonder how they will do when they hit the street and who will take a gamble on them. A product line failure and subsequent bad name is hard to over come, even if the follow on product is great. It would be helpful if they posted some testing results.

As for weight, 15# for a 17x8 wheel seem really good. In comparison my 17x7 Enkei Racing wheels are 14.5#.

My Panasports are 16x7 and are about 16 pounds but are the street versions, not the
The original 6UL's were 15x8 and were something like 12 pounds and the 17x8's were about 15 pounds. I was intent on getting a set of 15's for my Justa but the ultra light weight did give me pause as I'd be street driving the car most of the time. Most said that these should carry a OFF ROAD USE ONLY label as some of the Panasport racing wheels do.

These new ones add a little more weight but not a lot and are made differently so I'm thinking that they should be more durable but like you said, I am lacking confidence in the product. And with the three cars that the wife and I have - each with two sets of wheels and tires, I have no place to put another set. I can hardly keep the ones I have stored properly.

Emilio007, a somewhat common poster on Miata.net is connected to 949Racing and seems to be a part owner of but most certainly works for Supermiata which is the only way I can find a link to 949Racing and these wheels- said that they spent a lot of time looking into the issues and finding a new manufacturer for the wheels. They did pull them off the market very quickly.

I will be getting some 3mm spacers and a set of 17mm lug nuts so I can put the Panasports on the Miata..... eventually. But that means i need new tires for that set of wheels....... My income and budget doesn't get any bigger but the expenses do........

Our R50 runs the MINI Cooper holie wheels:

MINI’s lightest wheel

Is just 11 lbs and with a 185-65x15 tire is great on pot hole filled roads…

R53

I’m thinking of trying these on the R53 with 215/45/17 tires. Im already running about -2.5 f and 1.5 r camber rear. Will I still run into rubbing issues? What I really want to avoid is any poke/tire or wheel sticking out beyond the fender.

The Holies are great - we have a set for our R53. We had 195/50's on them at one time, a bit pinched but didn't seem to do the tires any serious harm. My wife autocrossed the snot out of them on her old R50. We did keep them after she sold the R50 for the R53 and now use them as winter wheels. The 195's might be pinched too much for the extra weight of the R53 to really be a viable size on the Holies.

Can't say for certain. It would depend on what springs you have installed and which tire you are running on. Not all 215's are actually the same width. The camber you listed isn't a huge amount but it is possible there could be some rubbing on the springs. A friend lent me set of track tires for his MINI and the tires rubbed on my Megan Racing Euro 2 coilovers springs. You might be able to get away with a 3mm spacer without getting longer lug bolts. The people at 949 should have a better idea on that. No harm in shooting them an email with a few questions.
