I'm running 205/40 r18s on Michelin PSS and is absolutely awesome. I've been thinking on PS4s but I think Michelin don't make them on 205/40 r18. I think you are going to need some spacers if you want to run 245s.
Michelin makes several possible Max Summer tires in this size, Pilot Super Sport being one of the best street tires. Prices may be discounted at tire rack currently
245/35-18 will fit on a narrow 18x7.5" rim but it's not ideal, it will looked pinched, tire is too wide and sides will be over the width of the rim. For performance driving you won't be able to use the wider tire size as well and tread wear may be greater when turning
If you are only street driving then a Max Summer tire is a good choice however if you want even more traction for warm climates and you don't mind faster tread wear in trade for better performance then consider Extreme Summer tires like-
Bridgestone RE71R
215/40-18 $164.25 each in stock on special at tirerack now. fits 7-8.5" rim, perfect for 7.5" wide rim, tire diam. 24.8", XL load rated.
Extreme summer tires tend to ride firmly and are noisy, slightly less grip in wet weather than the Pilot Super Sport but still OK.
215/40-18 is a good size for 7.5" wide rims but most tires are Ultra High Performance All Season tires which work for street use and some cold weather. Performance is not as good as Max Summer tires but they do last longer.
Understood, and thanks for the advice, particularly about exceeding the rim.
I need to have a bit more tire on the ground than currently. Perhaps 235/40r18 is a better bet. They’d appear to have the same size sidewall as my current 215/45r17s... I’d gain about 10mm in height and lose about 10mm of gap. 225/40r18 is also an option.
235/40 on 7,5" rims have the same problems as 245/35. They are out of the approved rim width range.
Why do you need such wide tires? Why not to put 215/40 which are perfect?
For the last 5 years I have been running 235/40/17 on 71/2 rims. No rubbing,no problems. I use a 12.5 spacer in front because it's a JCW but you cold get by with, say a 5.
Also car is lowered 2 inches and run a splitter.

I’m now running Michelin PS/4s 235/40r18 on NM RSe12 wheels. Had to retreat to stock springs in the rear, and need to come up about 1/4 inch in the front (to avoid hard dig rubbing). Looks great, no rubbing under ordinary conditions, and the ride and grip are ridiculous.
Ok ... here are some pictures of Buzz with the new shoes.
I still need to come up about 1/4 to 1/2 inch in the front I think, but I kinda like the rake of it.
Pretty wide, but tucked in nicely.
A little higher in the back due to stock springs here.
On NM Alpha springs in the front ... need to come up just a little
I'm bringing this back to not start a new thread.
My project car has 17x8 et35, if I'm doing the math right a 245 should work with this offset??
Hoping to use it for autox if it clears.
EDIT- I'm reading there will be rubbing issues on the fenders...might have to go 225 for my sanity and save some weight too.
245's are going to need a 9" wide wheel. I'm in the same boat.....I want to run 245's for a track wheel and can't find a 16x9 wheel. I am running a set of oz racing 17x8's with 225 tires on it now

What tire size were you going to use for autocross? Street tire or Race tire? 245mm wide for 17" that fit the MINI are very limited
Example
Toyo Proxes R1r
245/35-17 fits wheels 8-9.5" wide, perfect for 8.5" wide rim, tire diam 23.8" which is tall so not good with lowered suspension but will fit OEM suspension.
Alternatively
235/40-17 fits wheels 8-9.5" wide, perfect for 8.5" wide rim, tire diam 24.4"
235/40-17 gives good tire selection for Extreme Summer or race tires
or
245/4017 is OK size but slightly taller tire diam. of 24.7"
