Proper Lug Torque Specs?

Hi guys,

I have a 2012/2013 (really not sure) Mini Cooper Classic (Knightsbridge) with stock 16" wheels and I'm changing them to 15" for snow tires (on steel rims with stock lug nuts)

I am wondering what's the proper torque spec to the lugs? Since I'm going to DIY I want to make sure I torque to proper settings so I don't put myself in danger on the road, nor do I want to break the studs.

I've searched around and found posts that say 85, 103 etc. So no definite answer. Hopefully I can get all the MC guys here to chime in and lend me some knowledge.

Thanks

85 is fine. 103 is for the GP.

103 ft-lb (140 Nm) is the proper spec for the larger bolts, which come with a 2012/13.

85 was the spec for the older small bolts which havent' been used since 06.

Just did wheels on a 2011. 103.3 ft-lb is what is stated in the owner's manual. There is actually a lot of good info in that little book.

What is GP? 103 and 85 seems like a BIG difference...

I have the black bolts...any idea if that's big or small?

The GP was a special edition Gen 1 MINI put out in 2006. There will be another for the Gen 2 MINI as it ends its run.

You have the "big" bolts, so 103 is the spec.

2007 - present should be all the same.

Don't forget to re-torque them after you have driven 20 miles or so.

That would be correct. I should have paid more attention to detail in my reply. I have the older R53 GP which is 103 foot pounds.

It is all about the bolt size.

The 12mm bolts (Gen 1s) are ~85 ft-lbs; the 14mm bolts (Gen 2s) are 103 ft-lbs. I guess the GPs have the 14mm, I don't know for sure but the torque would say that.

'07s - 2013s with 14mm bolts will all be 103.

I think MINI used a mix of black and gold color bolts of different sizes. Check your owner's manual. If you don't have one and want to measure them, 14mm is just a little smaller than 9/16 inch and 12mm is just a little larger than 7/16 inch.

Could it be that we're mixing bolt size with socket size??

They all use a 17mm socket.

The "size" that determines the torque is the diameter at the threads. Yours are 14 mm.
