Changing Hub
Hub replacement
- remove driveshaft retaining nut (if front)
- remove brake including rotor
- remove wheel speed sensor
- remove 4 bolts holding the hub
reassemble is the reverse ....
driveshaft/hub retaining nuts 134 ft lb
hub to hub carrier 41 ft lb
speed sensor bolt 7 ft lbs
chapter 10 in the Haynes
The front axle nut on my 06 mcs is 1 1/4 inches and the four bolts holding the hub in place are 1/2 heads. It is not necessary to remove the speed sensor, just lift it out carefully.
Seems a shame to have to replace an expensive hub just to fix a stripped thread. How did the strip happen?

It may be a metric size but there are a ton of sizes that are cross compatible in size. 10mm is one of the ones where you just must have a 10mm. It a socket fits nice and snug, it will work no matter if it is metric or not.
If it is not 1/2 then it will be 12mm or 13mm, but if my 1/2 fit, then 13 would most likely be too large. I just happened to have a 1/2 inch lying right beside me when and tried it and it was a really good fit, so I used it.
I was checking mine for a bad bearing and decided to pull both fronts to feel them turn in my hand. I'm getting pretty old now-a-days so I'm not as spry as I used to be, but I pulled the hub and played with it off the car and put it back on and had the jack back down in 65 min. A younger dude and in a hurry could do it a lot faster I'm sure.

That's still a GEN1 right? Check the GEN1 forum, it has been discussed many times. I doubt much has changed from the prodecure given in the Haynes which is pretty straight forward. ... you don't mention if this is front or rear but:
- remove driveshaft retaining nut (if front)
- remove brake including rotor
- remove wheel speed sensor
- remove 4 bolts holding the hub
reassemble is the reverse ....
driveshaft/hub retaining nuts 134 ft lb
hub to hub carrier 41 ft lb
speed sensor bolt 7 ft lbs

Anyone give me some advice on how to replace a hub that I stripped a lug hole on? I have a 08 MCS Cabrio.
