Air Compressors

After visiting 4 gas stations with broken air pumps this month, I've decided to buy an air compressor and do my weekly tire maintainance at home.

I've narrowed my choices down to a Campbell Housfeld FP 2048.

Anyone have experience with it?

Fine for home use to air tires and such.
Campbell Housfeld is a good name in industrial applications making some very big compressors.
Don't expect to do much more than tires with 1 CFM at 40 PSI and .07 CFM at 90 PSI.
(Rant on) Stupid write up about the 2 gallon tank. Tank size means almost nothing when really using an air compressor. The amount of compressed air is what matters - CFM (Rant off)

Think bigger.

When the day comes that you want to do more than inflate a tire (slowly) you'll wish you had purchased a larger unit. Go check out Home Depot, and do yourself a favor.

I'd probably recommend something slightly larger and more powerful than the OP linked to, but after owning one of the bigger 110V models Sears sells (5 hp/33 gal IIRC), I ended up giving it to a friend and borrowed my dad's little old Sears pancake compressor until I get another small one of my own.

I used my bigger compressor for my air impact, die grinder, and cut-off tool off and on over the last 7 years, but usually only once or twice a month at most for those kinds of things, and not much the last couple years. The most common use was for airing up tires for street and race use, and filling air tanks to take along to the autocross course, and the big compressor was just overkill for stuff like that. I'm planning to get a high quality small Dewalt/Emglo compressor for normal use in the next year or so.

I have an electric grinder and impact that are quicker and more handy to use than their air powered counterparts, but when I start doing more serious work on cars again, I'll eventually get a big 220V 60 gallon compressor and stick it in the corner of my shop for those occasional uses when I really need a lot more power.

I've considered getting that very one instead of one of the more expensive Dewalts. For the OP, one big advantage to getting one at Sears (or somewhere else local) instead of Amazon, is if somethig goes wrong, you just take it back where you bought it, instead of having to mail it back to Amazon.

I received this one for Christmas:
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...+%26+Inflators

It's a nice size (fit's under my shop table) and will fill up a tire in no time. However, you are limited to a cutting tool, air guns, etc. with it's output. It's also very handy for cleaning dust out of anything.

Unless you are inflating tires for a tractor trailer truck every day, just get the 12V air pump like the one in the Tire Goo Kits..............

I have been using one similar now for 10 years, had to swap out the 12v plug once for a new one, and it still pumps car tires like the Energizer Bunny.
