Some tire advice needed please!

I have an 05' MCSc with about 18,700 miles on it and the OEM dunlops are just about shot in the front. (the ones in the back on the other hand are not too bad). I am getting close to needing new tires so I called up the local NTB and got a few ideas from the sales guy...

1. Kuhmo Ecsta SPT blackwalls

2. BF Goodrich G-Force T/A

I asked about Michelin Pilots and the salesman said to stay away from them. He said that in recent years customers have been complaining and that the overall quality has gone down. This sounded a little odd to me so I didn't make any decisions. Is there any truth to this? This wouldn't be the first time that I've gotten weird advice from an automotive-related inquiry.

Also does anyone have any other suggestions?...a good amount of the driving is from A-B but she does get some spirited driving. (all depends on the driver )

Tires

I bought my car used at the end of March with 24K miles and shod with a set of Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2 tires.

As of today I have over 55K miles and the SAME set of tires which probably have at least another 20K left on them. I have rotated them once front to back and they are wearing as you might have guessed VERY well.

I have the 17-45/17 on my S Lites and enjoy them being able to handle anything I can throw at them around the corners. I think that is why it was rated the #2 ultra performance tire. They also do well in the wet although I don't push them THAT hard.

At about $135 per tire if you do a little shopping, I consider them a bargain.

Just my 2 cents worth..

When I am looking for tires I head to tirerack.com. Even if I am not going to buy from them they still have a wealth of information about most tires, including reviews from people who actually have bought them and are using them. While your salesman may be very honest and only have your best interest in mind there are plenty who may be pushing the tire that they have the most mark-up on, or the tire that they are overstocked with, etc. It is a good source to get many different opinions about many different tires.

We have some pretty reliable tires such as Toyo, Faken, ect. that work well for the Mini.

Thanks for the advice. The BF Goodrich T/As are a good $100 more than the Kuhmos... I think Im going to do a little more shopping.

if you're going to have the tires mounted locally check to make sure
they have the equipment to remove runflats and mount tires without
scratching the rim.

ideally you want a shop that has a hunter tc3500.

I'm happy with my Kumho SPTs although I haven't personally used them much in rain. The wife has and hasn't said anything negative so that means they are as good or better than the OEM Dunlop run flats. I have run the Kumho MX in the rain on my RX7 and its a great tire overall.

Note that the SPT is not an all season tire so traction in the snow will be limited. Do you intend on driving in the snow with whatever tires you are looking at?
