My coilover saga comes to a happy ending- with pics…

From the beginning, I knew that when I purchased my all black 04 MCS, I wanted to slam it. I bought and installed M7 springs for the car- which helped but from the first time the car was let off the jacks after the install, I knew I wanted it to be lower. A few weeks ago I purchased an OBX header and sent it off to Performance Coatings to be ceramic coated. It was shipped back to me and I was in the process of making arrangements to have it installed when I noticed a set of H&R coilovers for sale in the marketplace section for $400….$400! This had to be a misprint right? I contacted the seller (JLM- thanks again!) and made arrangements to purchase them. I sold the header to help cover the cost of the coilovers and install- so that all worked out. I had the coilovers installed by Prestige Performance here in San Antonio- they have done all the upgrades (exhaust, pulleys, etc) on my car- their service is top notch and their prices are very reasonable. With the coilovers installed I have lowered the car a total of around 2 inches all the way around- the wheels tuck in the wells in front and back. For the first few days I had some slight rubbing issues where the tires were rubbing the plastic fenders during turning, but that is gone and it was only SLIGHTLY rubbing- you can’t even see any evidence on the tires. I had to trim the front plastic “lip” as it was literally one inch off the ground- it rubbed on EVERYTHING! I also had to have my resonator changed out on my ALTA exhaust as it was the lowest point on the car- since the change nothing sticks out from under the frame- so between removing the lip and changing out the resonator I was able to get the car lower and have MORE ground clearance that before….strange. As far as the ride goes, I was extremely pleasantly surprised. One of the board members had some very negative things to say about the H&R coilovers- the version I have are the clubman coilovers. The car rides as well as a stock MCS. I was a bit spoiled by the M7 springs as they were softer than the factory springs, the H&R coilovers feel great and handle like a dream. Overall I am extremely happy with the system and have finally gotten the car to the height I want it at and the best part is now it is adjustable. I also had a set of RDR control arms installed at the same time as the coilovers- the alignment shop was able to get the alignment back to 100% stock settings with the control arms- I wish I would have gotten them sooner. I may be moving overseas for a year with work beginning next summer (May-June timeframe) so don’t be surprised to see the car listed for sale next year. It would be a shame to have this sit for a year and not be used. Here are some pics post install, if anyone can host pics I have higher resolution ones I can send via e-mail. I also posted most of the pics in my gallery. Feel free to contact me with any questions. Thanks!

That looks so good!!!!!!!!!!! I always loved the look of your car with the m7 springs but now I love it even more . What is the offset of your wheels and what tire size? With a two inch drop I would expect there to be a lot more rubbing than what you said .

Ben- thanks! I thought the same thing, they are 42mm offset, 17x7 Flik Fuels with 205/45/17 Falken tires. I think if it were ANY lower I would have issues- but right now it doesn't rub at all, even over a speed bump!

Nice!

Did you have to drill any holes to install the M7 grill in the lower front bumper? I'm thinking about getting one of those. Also hoping to have an h-sport comp bar installed at Prestige next weekend.

Gees,

Thanks for the comments- the ride really isn't bad at all- trust me, I thought it would be horrible, but it is about like stock, just a LITTLE firmer

I was wondering if they had a lower bumper grill for the aero front apron? Hey Jason, how about a front splitter? Would look sweet

Berk- not sure if they make an insert for the aero bumper, give them a call- they were very easy to work with. A front splitter? Being this low that would be ASKING for trouble!

Looks great!

I was one who was deadset against the H&R's solely because mine is an 05 model and something was wrong with the H&R's when I installed them from 3 different installers, trying to rectify the clunking, clacking and very bouncy ride they caused. When all was said and done, they were returned under warranty through Tire Rack and H&R, as they seemed to not fit correctly on the 05.

I am very glad you are happy with them on your car, and they are working well for you. H&R makes a good product, but it just wasnt compatible with my vehicle at that time.
