better yet, does anybody know which ones are the best for which conditions? It seems like the pricing on them are quite varied. What makes Eibach and H&R so much more expensive?

Sometimes suspension springs are rated in "lbs" (is this spring rate?). I was told by a reputable racer you want to take the car's weight and divide by 4 and that should be the initial "lbs" you should start with and adjust from there. Anyone have the "lbs" rating of the above springs?

That may be good and well for racing purposes, but on a 2600lb MINI I promise you that you don't want 650lb/in springs.

That would make for a disgustingly rough ride... stock are in the neighborhood of 200-250 lb/in. And most aftermarket don't go much above 350.

front & rear numbers, settled?

That is a good source to think which one to choose, thanks. So, everyone says the spring needs time to settle, so those figures for both front and rear are the numbers before it settle (initial drop right after installed), after it is settled (for some time), or just guess from manufacture that is the most drop it can get?

Yep, lbs/inch

Basically saying how many pounds it would take to compress the
spring by one inch. for progressive rate springs, they should give
you two rates. one for initial, one for full or close to full compression.

I remember getting a spring education from Randy Webb a few months back (will be ordering the H-sports from him soon). I will try and recall what he said but I am sure I will get it wrong.

The stock springs have a standard rate of compression around 200lbs (I could be off and probably am but this can be used as an example)

The H-Sports are designed to have a variable rate of compression. This means that on a normal ride the compression will be around 160 giving you a softer ride and at compression through hard cornering around 250 giving you a much stiffer handling that would want in tight corners.

I know the compression rates are different like I mentioned above but I may be completely wrong on the actual numbers so please only use those as an example

Chris

That's exactly what they were talking about. A race track ONLY car.

Kenchan, thanks for the clarification on the rating "lbs/in"

Here are some rates and prices from a well known site :

H-Sports
195 lbs/in front
300 lbs/in rear
$225

H&R
260 lbs/in front
260 lbs/in rear
$240

PSS9
320 lbs/in front
340 lbs/in rear
$1750

Leda
combo
250 lbs/in front
350 lbs/in rear
race
350 lbs/in front
500 lbs/in rear
$1900

Stock
225 lbs/in front
220 lbs/in rear

I have tested most of the others as well, but I'm at home and don't have the info right now. I like the H-Sports a lot - for several reasons. If you take a look down the page about 3/4 of the way, I have explained why here:

http://www.webbmotorsports.com/faq.php

I noticed the drops you have listed, and I can say from personal experience they aren't quite accurate. There are differences between cars, options and spring manufacturing runs. Give me a call for speicific info.

The aftermarket springs, other than on coilover kits, are progressive. What that means is that for each inch of compression, the rate increases. This allows for a nice ride under standard loads, and firmer rates as the car is loaded more (like in a turn). The above rates are more of an average than a true rate, since they are progressive.

For full race set ups on the coilovers, I use rates of 350 lbs/in and 500 lbs/in respectively. Those are linear rates, and would be a killer on the street.

Hope that helps!
Randy

the "best" sprngs for you might be horrible for someone else. what are your goals/plans for the car? even a drop for cosmetic reasons has a number of options, depending upon where you live and how you drive. no cookie-cutter answer.

Reviving the thread. My goal for my mini is just better handling and lowering as well for center of gravity reason. Only really have money for springs, I know swift is highly recommend. My question is are they good with stock struts? It is there a better spring out their for stock struts?

Hi Carlos, great thread! Do you have KONI spring specs and how much they will lower the car in use with KONI Yellows?
