Loud squeak at ignition and clutch engagement.

Not constant. But yeesh. How high pitched can it be? anyone heard such a thing?

It happends when starting the car (sometimes) and when slipping the clutch into a load. ~1 second long.

If this sounds like a problem I might have trouble getting a MINI tech to diagnose, you'd be right.

New clutch installed earlier this summer for other reasons. Sound has been happening for a month.

Sometimes I get a loud squeak/chatter at 1st gear engagement. Not all the time, & when it does it's usually when the motor bogs a little - like starting out on a hill. I first noticed it after installing a custom exhaust about 18k miles ago. Thought it was something to do with that, but I've changed it twice since then & it still happens from time to time. Some people have complained of flywheel noise. I wonder if that's what it is..

dead-on, bodinski! I've tolerated that chatter from the day i drove it out. Just a jcw thing i said to myself. But that squeak that evolved ain't earthly. gremlins, baby. does the motor bog with dsc off? i atributed it to the software. be interesting if you had none, and if when i turn mine off - it continues to do so.

I don't have JCW anything, nor do I have DSC. It doesn't bog much, just when I'm a little stingy with the throttle at engagement, and especially on an uphill grade. Doesn't seem to be getting any worse..

ok when i've tried to pull away in the wrong gear (apparently third feels to my hand a bit like first), I hear a squeak of high pitch accompanying the knock of the engine working against the tranny.

That same high pitch squeak is the initial sound i hear upon ignition. Most of the time.

The "knock" your hearing will happen in any manual car. Your RPMs are too low for that gear and its NOT good for your car. Dont do that

thanks for the pointer. i know that one should avoid undue engine strain and how that strain is produced. not wondering about the knock. it's the squeak has me annoyed. on start up especially.

and tony... you mean nut-behind-the-wheel driver or the inner driver or something else?

I'm realy glad to hear it, tony, especially after seeing you work it late on saturday with a line of MINIs out back. Couldn't make me face that. now, uhhhhh, i guess we've got your input as far as possible diagnosis of a squeaking starter is concerned.

cheers.
