Rough Idle, the MINI take

While I was in getting the Alarm and rear fog activated I asked my SA about the rough idle that 05's were having. Apparently they are just calling it a characteristic of the vehicle and not going to release any more ECU upgrades to try and fix it, as the 'fixes' has given more problems than the rough idle. The rough idle is caused by when you come to a stop, in neutral, the ECU backs off the injectors and goes too far causing the problem. Just thought you guys would like to hear that.

Interesting to hear that as my 05 goes in for some rework on problems (don't take your car to MINI of Charleston if your life depends on it!) and the idle problem...oh well....

I am not sure I would call it a problem. However, that said... since I flashed MTH the car runs and idles much smoother. I wouldn't have even been aware of it... until not having it. So a big deal? No, I don't think so... but it can be eliminated. My 2 cents - for what it's worth. BTW - mine's an 05 MCS JCW.

Same problem here. I upgraded my '04 WORKS to '05 specs and I got a nice rough idle as a freebie!

Usually happens when I come to a stop. My SA said it had something to do with programming and air purging? Didn't quite catch that one. He did say that there may be a corrective download in the works.

It's more of a nuisance than anything else but after what I paid for the upgrade kit you think there'd be a fix on the way.

Aloha!

Well I'd stay after them about it...if enough people continue to raise the issue something will be done.......eventually . That seems to be the way it works. Kinda fills you w/ optimism for the new '07 powerplant doesn't it.

My SA said to tag MINI USA about the issue. If enogh owners keep up the squeeky wheel stuff we should see some action.

Seems to me the dealer should be helping out with this effort too !

Aloha!

Same deal - 04 with 05 JCW. In frequent rough idle after coming to a stop. A quick blip o' the pedal fixes it.

I noticed the last time I had rough idle I didn't blip the throttle and it just went back to normal in five seconds. Strange..

The SA at Princeton MINI in New Jersey told me that mine was due to the aftermarket coil, wires and cold air untake.CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!!!! Mine in an '03 that DID NOT have this problem BEFORE they flashed it with the new update. My car has 21,000 miles....the mods were made two years ago when the car has 156 miles on it. Incompetance at its best!! Oh, and by the way, did NOTHING to fix it...Essentially TS for me!!

That doesn't surprise me one bit. But really, the SA's must think we are stupid... and don't know are cars. When WE are the ones who know our cars all too well. They think they can just sweep us under the rug with baseless comments like that.

Rough idle on my '02, ever since....

I had the ECU flashed with the new update for the emissions recall. The idle is so bad it gives the 21 year old 944 a run for the money

My 12-02 build '03 non-JCW MCS did it once in 20,000 miles. Then I got v.38 & now it happens frequently. I don't think that JCW has anything to do with it. It would appear to be in the recent code for all MCS's, JCW or otherwise.

Yep, I got it after the emissions upgrade was done to my MCS.

I was told it's a fuel-quality issue

Its nice to know I am in good company on this one. I just got the emissions 'upgrade' as well.

More recently, and perhaps not due to the same upgrade, I find the motor no longer starts on the first turn of the key. Whether I give it gas or not, it wants to stall once before it catches. Its fine after that.

Mine seems to choke a little and then come back up but generally only when cold and only after I've run up the tach a little. Sitting in my driveway or idling down the street in 1st and then stopping doesnt seem to cause it. 4/05 build MCS

What he said, same build date car, same v38 upgrade, same rough idle afterwards after 2 years of no such thing.
