chirping noise from air conditioner

Daughters 04 Mini S developed this chirping sound , after driving from CT. to FL. for college this week. Car has 113,000 mi. 6 speed . Just changed the oil & air filter, rotated tires after checking brakes. She says did not make noise until she got to college, air still blows ice cold . No noise with air off . Any help would be greatly appreciated , with her being 1,100 mi. away would like to hear what it might be before she goes for repair. Also any recommendations for mini repair shops in Gainsville FL. ? Thanks for any help.

Where is the chirping noise; under the hood or in the cabin? If it’s under the hood it could be the clutch bearing on the compressor. If it’s in the cabin it could be the bearings on the blower motor. With the AC off and the blower on do you still hear it?

I had a chirping blower motor on a BMW E46. I pulled the blower motor out, allowed some oil to penetrate the bearings on both ends of the motor shaft. It's been a year and the motor is still silent.

Getting to the blower motor on an E46 is easy. I'm not sure about getting to it on the R50/2/3.

Thanks jfrantz for the tip . But it looks like the dash has to come out to get at the blower motor . I'll check it when I go visit in the fall .

Ugh. I certainly hope the dash doesn't have to come out. If that is the case, there is a lubricant called Tri-Flow which comes in a small bottle with a 3" straw. The Tri-Flow bottle and straw are probably small enough where you could apply it to the motor shaft bushing while the motor is in place. I used to repair copiers about 30 years ago and Tri-Flow was a blessing for lubricating things. It is a light oil with PTFE (Teflon) so it penetrates very well.

That would be a welcome alternative to removing the dash. I will look into Tri-Flow & see if I can get at the bushings without removing to much of the dash .

This, as you know is an issue which hasn’t had a whole lot of discussion.

Please report back with your results and whichever method worked for you. That’s how this forum becomes more and more valuable.
