metallic whistling sound

Any ideas where this metallic whistling sound is coming from when i hit the gas pedal hard? I believe it is the turbine but id like to hear an opinion. The mini is suffering from a loss of power but at the moment the only codes that i had were P000A-Powertrain and P0420-Powertrain. Any suggestions?

Wait for the engine to cool and remove the intake tube to the turbo, with the car off, feel for bearing play. That doesn't sound too hot, chances are you're in for a turbo.

No worries, thanx for the comment. I wonder though, can there be loss of power due to this issue?

Definitely can cause low power issues, check it out and if it turns out it needs a turbo we have either new Borg Warner units, or rebuilt units in stock and ready to ship.

Should there be a CEL?
Can you tell me more stuff/info regarding the Borg Warner units? Are they like the JCW turbo units?
Will they need a chip upgrade in order to function properly?

If your turbo isn't generating boost then the ECU would just operate normally as if you were lightly tapping on the pedal. I can clearly hear your turbo shaft spinning like it's not getting any oil, what's happening is you turbo shaft has to much end play causing that screeching sound. Replace the turbo oil line while your at it, those get clogged up with burnt oil over time.

Thanx for the info Systemlord! What do you mean that my turbo shaft has too much end play? Just to not, this screeching sound only occurs when the car is cold started, after few min of use the sound goes away!

All of the chargers used on the 2nd gen MINIs are manufactured by Borg Warner, we have new in stock chargers or rebuilt units.

To run a larger charger properly tuning is required.

If the car isn't reaching requested boost levels, yes, you will get an underboost code which will put you into a limp mode.

Skip ahead in the video to about the 2 minute mark, you'll get a better understanding of what shaft play is and what it causes.
