Hard Drive type

Does anyone know what type of hard drive in the new Mini? Is it integrated or can it be swapped with a faster or larger drive?

Well, you would have to reload - from somewhere - Nav, music, owner's manual, etc

There is a thread on bmw forums about swapping out the HD. Looks really difficult.

It's a 200GB hard drive and it is next to impossible to replace. Not just any HD will work, they have to meet a certain spec and have to be "signed" - the car will check for it. There's one guy on Bimmerfest who's undertaken a swap for funsies, but it is VERY involved and I don't think he was successful. Definitely not an easy project even for the veteran modder with a comp sci background.

EDIT: I should mention also for people unfamiliar, that the hard drive is only found on the Connected XL unit. It store nav data, system data and has 20GB allocated for music storage.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't planning on swapping it out. I was just curious. I would like to know if it is an SSD or not though.

Nope. Mechanical automotive grade hard drive.

Here's the thread on Bimmerfest if you're interested:

@MES11: I bought an additional USB port, modified it and connected to a active USB Hub. Then I have installed an external SSD. The front USB still works together with the SSD.

icep, I'm having trouble believing what I'm seeing.

Is there a thread somewhere?

That additional USB port is in your glovebox? Is it a MINI part?

Do you have nav? I was not able to get anything additional connected with a hub and my non-nav radio.

@hammerhands: the usb port in the glove box and the hub are 3rd party parts. I've connected the Hub to the front USB port and the modified front panel usb and SSD to the hub. I have snap-in adapter too and all works simultaneously.

Wait, am I the only one to notice that you put the JCW exhaust controller in your CLA port? That is an excellent idea for placement!

Does the hub have more than one usb connection or is it just an extension of the existing one.

I tried with a hub a while ago, but could only get one input at a time to work.
