Has anyone used 10-60w oil in their mini

I see 10-60w oil at the local parts house and was wondering if anyone has used this in their mini cooper turbo motors. BMW uses it and seeing as the turbo mini generates lots of heat i was just curious.

Does not your manual specify BMW standards and viscosity classes for approved oil?

Do not deviate one iota from the specifications in the owners manual. Even minor experimentation could lead to expensive repairs.

BMW uses it for what you didn't say (or ask?). +1 on previous 2 posts.

Castrol.com claims BMW recommends Edge 10-60W for M engines. The page was written in 2014. I've seen reports here that MINI oil is now Shell.

It' always a safe bet to follow the manual otherwise you enter the status of becoming a test pilot---and that can be expensive.

Some good advice alluded to by buzzsaw (an old pilot): "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots but there are no old, bold pilots. Don't be a show off and never be too proud to turn back." E. Hamilton Lee. It goes the same for a lot of other activities besides flying.

I wouldn't. It's not an old VW with worn crank bearings.

Come July or so, MINI is moving to 0W30 from the 5W30. Just stick with what is recommended for oil, but more frequent intervals than recommended by manufacturer.

And join the 5K (or sooner) oil change club.

Why would you want to run 10w60? I'd stick with something that MINI recommends.

Weights and viscosities generally effect bearing clearances that are of concern to professional race teams and if you are not part of this group the factory spec will work fine. I personally have found 10-60w to be great to slick my 18 hairs straight back so I look fast when I'm standing still.
