Ok, I know The MC cvt is a bit laggy in the take off, but I was wondering what the best way to get going is? Should I floor it in D, or SD, should I start in first cvt gear?, should I not floor it should I go to the threshold but not push the tip of the gas down to floor it? suggestions comments.. I was wondering how I can beat someone off the line.. and don't say ( buy an S) I'm not trying to race, just pull ahead at a light.

Actually an S won't get you off the line as quick as many other cars. It's pretty sluggish "off the line"...

Two answers, one sarcastic and one maybe useful:
1) You beat them off the line by catching them napping ["Oh you did not know we were racing? Sorry

In an automatic can't you just rev it in neutral then put into D when you want to take off...

the brake trick does work well in the CVT.
i'm not much for neutral drops, i don't want to kill my ride!

Point it downhill....

Sorry, couldn't resist. I'm really curious to drive a CVT Cooper...I've tried revving up to 2500 RPM's and dumping the clutch at the light, but I don't want to kill the clutch either. Neutral drops seem a bit risky - maybe the first CVT gear is the best idea. Try it in an abandoned parking lot. My wifes car has a CVT or Steptronic transmission type thing available, although starting in first is a bit odd. Soemthing I guess you need to get used to.

Does the CVT allow you to shift 1,2,3,4,5 as the RPM's get close to redline? I really have no clue on how it works...

First of all, turn the traction switch to off. It limits the amount of power.
From there, you need to practice. You need to get those RPMs up. If it is to low, you are going to lag, big time. I like to pump my throttle at the light to get the RPMs up.....them punch it and drop that clutch. You are going to get some wheel spin, but you will get off the line faster. It is a little difficult to get the hang of....but with enough practice, you will improve your response time dramatically!
Good luck.

First off you cant do a neutral drop in a CVT cause it wont let you. You have to depress the brake to put it into drive from neutral for this exact reason. They don't want you to kill your car.
The way the CVT works is, when you press on the gas the computer sets a "target speed". So obviously the harder you press, the higher the target speed the computer will set, and the higher your RPMS will go. So actually the best way to go off the line, is to simply put the pedal to the floor past the "resistance point" and the car will accelerate its quickest. This was explained to me in a MINI training video where a race car driver who works for MINI demonstrates how the CVT works by racing it on the track. He explained the whole computer and "target speed" concept.

OK ok , im from across the pond, no offence but im guessing CVT means iits a slow lazy man automatic? or steptronic, well to be fair if your going to be lazy and have an auto your gonna have to put up with not being able to motor away at the taffic lights cause i have driven a host of auto's and well.. i will stick with manual gears any time (tho in the UK manuals is standard and auto is option at some £1000+

happy motoring!

thankyou all for the information I appreciate it. Esspecially that training video comment, can I get that video somewhere?
I understand I'll never hit the same accel as a stick, but that not the point, I just wanted to know the best way for a CVT to accelerate.
Speed is not my major reason for owning the mini, though I may one day get an S if I move out of metro DC and my hour 20 min commute. :???: thanks again if anybody has any more info I'd be happy to take more advice on teh cvt accl subject.
