Spirit of the Season / Toys 4 Tots
Hey everyone,
As a teacher in a high crime/high poverty community in Los Angeles County, I come into contact with families from some of the more impoverished homes in Southern California. Many of you, perhaps, live close to, or work near, other similar neighborhoods. I need not delve into the "problems" inherent to these enclaves.
No matter your religious background, or lack thereof, we all understand that children all around SoCal are hoping for toys this holiday season.
What I would like to propose is a Toys For Tots ( http://www.toysfortots-socal.org/2003/index.asp ) drive/outing.
Knott's Berry Farm is one drop-off spot. Donate a new unwrapped toy valued at $10 or more and receive FREE admission to the park during annual this TOYS FOR TOTS drive. They have set aside this weekend and next (Dec. 13/14) for this event.
Obviously, this weekend is committed so our participation would need to be the next Saturday or Sunday. What do you guys think about taking part in this?
If we go with it, we'd need to move fast. You'd have to commit pretty soon. If it appears we have a sizeable group, then we could organize some kind of run. We might even consider informing the Knott's amusement park of our intentions, maybe get us a designated parking area
I take no credit for this idea- it's been posted as an Owner's Event on MINIUSA by the MINI Motoring Club of the Carolinas. Toys For Tots began here in Southern California, thus making it more compelling to participate.
What say you?

You're the first one indicating a preference Jenn so the votes are 1-0 in favor of Saturday.
Any more takers?

Yay! Get to meet Mike and Donna!
I vote for this Sunday or either day next weekend. I'm getting up early for an oil change tomorrow morning.

lounytoon, a number of us are motoring to Palm Springs this Sunday, so it's got to be next weekend.
blacknblue, either day is okay... I just prefer Saturday is all.
First off, a great big MINI thank you to all who've responded to this call for giving. Your car may be small but your heart is bigger.
Okay, here's the latest on a Toys For Tots run this weekend:

Since there are only two weekends left before Christmas, we should plan on meeting Saturday (Dec. 13th) morning at 10 o'clock in front of Rowland Water District at 3021 S. Fullerton Road, Rowland Heights, CA 91748-4706. (corner of Fullerton Road and Harbor Blvd.) At 10:30 we will drive about 12 miles toward Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park. This will allow you to have the rest of the day to yourselves, to either stay at Knott's, shop at area malls, or return from whence you came.

* Each unwrapped toy valued at $10 or more entitles you to one free admission valid on that day only.
* All Day Parking is $8 per auto.
* There is a free three-hour parking lot available for short visits.
I will not be staying at Knott's. Instead, I will be giving my tickets to one of my students and her mother, after all, this is all about the kids. (I'm having them meet me there so I can turn over the tickets.) You may consider doing the same.
Let's make this a MINI Christmas for all.
