Special License plates

Ever wonder what some of those odd license plates are about? Or which are available? Or how to get them?

Here's a government site explaining it all.

Now, I have sent an email to the NCDOT asking how to go about getting a new Special Interest plate/design. Can you guess what for? Who would pay an extra $10 a year for one?

I believe there is a required minimum number of people requesting the plate before they'll consider it. Read about this once, but don't remember the details.

I couldn't find any details on the website, thus the email. Should hear something in a couple days.

In VA they have a requirement of people who have to be interested. My town recently cancelled a possible special interest plate because they only had about 100 people interested and needed more before the State would so it.

Hmm, can we come up with 100+ people between the Carolinas? On one hand I hope so. Would be cool to have a plate as unique as the car. On the other hand, I want a unique car so hopefully there are not that many MINIs in the Carolinas!

Well it would have to be one or the other of the Carolina's as you wouldn't be able to mix and match state plates.

So it would be. That's what I get for letting my fingers do the talking.

Hey PC,

If I remember correctly all you need in 300 people, (read it somewhere) and your cost is off just a bit. The charge will be a minimum of $30 above the normal cost of $20. Some plates cost more.

I just went back to a normal plate this year due to the price increase. Although it was only $10 bucks more then last year, I'm buying plates for 5 cars and have them all come due at the same time so I couldn't justify the extra cost.

Depends on the plate Smokey. Some plates, like the Carolina Hurricanes one, are only $10 extra per year. Others are more and part of the money goes to a special fund like the Friends of the Great Smokey Mountains ($30 more per year).

No way we can get 300 people in NC interested. I doubt there are that many MINIs in NC.

Sorry, I was thinking about a "Personalize" plate which runs $30 extra which bumped my Standard Issue plate to $50 for the year. Now if you wanted a personalized, special interest, NC plate that would run almost into the 4 cases of beer range
