Mark, I don't know if this is even a feature of "newer" forum softwares ...

Will the new version be able to provide an RSS feed?

Check out Yahoo's Top Stories RSS Feed

RSS feeds can be opened in news aggregators. They often show a snippet for a news item, and provide the ability to link back to the site to view more detail on that news item..

Gabe has something like this on motoringfile.com

Yes...I've given this some thought and would like to implement this at some point in the future. The big question I have is what should be included in the feed? Currently I see an RSS feed to be similar to a user-customizeable version of the Pulse plus news articles that are posted to the site, etc. Given this I'd like to hear what you would like to see in the feed.

Thanks

Mark

Mark,
I think a good idea would be to provide RSS feeds for the Pulse, and the top 5 forums (how bout some Off-Topic too though )

The feed for each forum would kinda works like the Pulse. You see the title of the thread, and can click it to open the thread back in NAM.

I think a great first step would be to implement an RSS feed for the Pulse and see how that goes.

Hope this was useful.

The forum software Mark is in the process of migrating too allows RSS feeds, XML feeds, and even JavaScript feeds for building things quickly like the pulse...these feeds are all customizable by the forums you want to include so in the future here it will most likely be possible to have an rss feed and the pulse with only the forums etc that you are interested in.

RSS feeds are a great idea. On another forum I'm an admin on, we have customizable feeds...and if you use the trillian chat client, you can pick up threads directly in your chat program without having to keep coming back to the site....heck, you can even respond to threads via your own email! it's very cool.

Bump.

So does the new vBulletin software provide for this functionality?

Side Note: I know you guys are up to your ears in implementing enhancements. I'm just curious. The site is looking great. I'm spending even MORE time here now

At least the feeds use "&goto=newpost" on the end of every link so that no matter how you have your thread display settings, it'll place you to the newest posting on the thread. I wish "pulse" would do this.

Sweet! Has this always been there waiting for someone familiar with the software to point it out?

Oh, how I would love to just use email instead of the web interface!

What am I doing wrong?

I just updated my SBC yahoo and noticed the RSS feed button. When I click on it, it says it can't find the feed.

Here's the message I get:

We couldn't find the RSS file you asked for http://external.php?type=rss
Suggestions:
  • - If you got here by clicking on an "Add to My" button, please notify the referring site's webmaster.
  • - If you entered the URL yourself, please check that the URL is correct and points to a valid RSS file.

Have you used the link that mferguson explains in this thread? It looks like you may have only gotten a portion of it.

I still can't get it to work. When I click on one of the links in that post, I get a message stating it the page is unavailable. I am new to this so if someone could dumb down the process, I'd appreciate it.

It seems that the easiest way to use it would be to click on the RSS button which gives me "add content to SBC Yahoo Home Page". I click it then I get the message.

I have no idea what I am doing. Just trying to make my life easier but this is really frustrating.
