Why has this site become so slow?

Most of the time when I click 'User CP', it takes what seems like forever to load a page. Has NAM been moved to another host site that has less speed?

It sure gets slow down here sometimes. Slow to load, and VERY slow to get pictures from.

Happens on four different computers, all w/HS internet.

It's been complained about off and on ever since Internet Brands bought the site. I'm convinced they turn the speed down to molasses periodically on purpose, I don't know whether this gets them a break on their hosting costs or what, but I've noticed it too and it's frustrating as hell, especially since I don't run into this on other sites not owned by them.....

However, complaining does absolutely no good, so save your breath (fingertips), eventually it comes back up again....

A word on the photos is since the auto resize tool has been installed, many people have been ignoring the 800x600 guide and just uploading the full 10 12 16 megapixel photo straight out of the camera instead, which can really consume bandwidth. When I see them that large they tend to be made links, the spirit of the resizer is more to allow a slightly larger image to not get rejected.

That said I am checking with IB to see if there was any maintenance or background work going on over the weekend.

Not a criticism, but -- the home page has had the picture of the "Dragon is Closed" sign since mid April. MOTD has come and gone, and I think the road has reopened, but the home page picture remains as if its current news.

Kinda gives any new viewer the feeling that no one is minding the store.

My opinion only, ymmv.

Well as I'm "minding the store" as it is I can tell you there certainly is a lot going on; just because it's not on the homepage doesn't mean it's not happening. There just haven't been as many bits of news that people have written and requested to be shared with the community. I'm quite open to sharing such things when people bring them to me. With MTTS and MITM if someone would like to report back and have information shared I'd be happy to make sure it see's he front page.

I did get a response from IB, there was no maintenance or anything going on in the background, if the problem continues, URLs and times of the site slowing will be helpful to pinpointing the cause of the slowness.

Is it the unimportant things like Off Topic that are slower? Tonight (10:50 pm) it took maybe 30 seconds to open the page.

Really? I kinda live in off-topic and it's never given me any more (or less) issue than the rest of the forum.

Took about 10 seconds tonight after clicking User CP.
Must have been over 30 seconds after clicking Once Upon a Time, is it just be that thread?

I just checked once upon a time and it did take about 15sec from the main forum listing to load the last page vs the usual 3-5 on my .64Mps "high speed internet" A full page refresh took 6sec and to go back to page 1538 took 7sec. hopping back to 1539 took 9sec.

Now that I can reproduce it I can start looking at possible causes, and turn it over to tech support if I can't figure it out.

Thanks for confirming the delay. So it's not just my POS Dell computer.

I am trying to replicate your issues, but I can open every page of that thread in about 4-5 seconds, nothing longer.

Are you guys using firefox? There is a plug-in called firebug that can be very helpful in trying to find out which page elements are causing the load times.

Computer illiterate that I am, the answer must be no.
At 2:28 pm it took less than 5 seconds to load.

Interesting. For a long time it has taken forever to load "Once Upon A Time". Last two times, I zipped right in. I changed nothing.

hey guys, level3 is having issues with their routers, and it's causing upwards of 50% packet losses for all of our sites.

apologies for the inconvenience.

cheers,
robb

Ah ha! Thanks, Robb. Glad to know we know what's to be known. Er...

That probably explains why the page display size keeps randomly shrinking on me. Grrrr...

I shall wait impatiently.

You think that's slow...my HD was filling up and nearly maxed out and my MacBook Pro was running very slow and combined with the slow NAM refreshes, it was taking 15 to 20 minutes and two or three refreshes before I would see content...I've solved the HD problem, and NAM is sometimes speedy and other times still slow.. such that I see the CSS frame work but no graphics. Got so bad last week that I wasn't able to do much on NAM at all.
