I can’t comment on the damper assembly but I can tell you the stock stabilizer does not prevent movement in the early model version nor does the late model configuration do any better. If you were to watch an engine while on the dyno you would see it move fore and aft a couple of inches and it wouldn’t be a slow give; more ballistic in nature.

What advantage does that red damper assembly pictured above offer to engine stabilization?

It would seem to me that the stock steel arm that connects the engine motor mount and the strut tower thru the rubber or replacement bushes will provide complete for and aft stabilization of the rocking motion.

Help me understand.

Yes....on 02-04 cars with that set up........05 have a "solid" mount which sits on the rail and does not attach to the strut tower. it flexs ALOT and using the damper would take alot of the motor movement out......BUT...i just saw a post from a guy in Japan who knows about the damper and heard people are complaining about the ride comfort.....There probably not used to a Solid mount and the vibration so thats why there crying about it......Im used to that in some of my early race cars and prob wont care in the Mini so im goin to try it.

Yes, your NVH will go through the roof. It will be rough during idle and any thing short of precise shifting will jerk your passenger around (making you look like a ***** )...although, it will teach you dissipline

ok, I am thinking I'm the only one who has done this.. I just got back from a drive, and as I was pulling into my slightly incline driveway, I noticed a pop and a tug. I immediately stop and popped the bonnet. Looked..everything seems ok.. I then noticed when the idle went up the engine rocked.. so i turned the engine off... I grabbed my intake hose from my turbo to the throttle body and tugged it a little. a little tug revealed that I totally blew out my front and/or rear engine mounts.. Now, I need a solution..

Anyone know where I could find sone replacement MOUNTS and RAILS for an '05?

Just changing the flavor...

It's the "first" sketch that kicked off the Ford GT40 project back in 1999

the thing is.....On the 05 mount ( upper ) theres nothing to press in or out to replace with a better one. 02-04 yes......I was thinking about goin to an 04 mount so i can do the inserts.......I have the whole set up off my friends car being hes building the crap out of the motor and it wont be done for some time. The lower one i used inserts which helped alil until the upper started goin more n more.

I also am trying an experiment with my VW friends......I think the VR6 mount might work b/c it female threaded on the bottom and studded on top just like ours. Not to sure how much better or worse it can be to this one though.

Zak...why not buy another Mini and TC it too. That way you'll have a spare Vader to drive when one breaks down

oooooooooo......: drool face :.....nice ......

There was a guy up in CT where i used to live that had a nice 510 in white that looked sick.....i had no idea wtf it was until i stopped one day to talk with him.....He had some big ars tires on the rear and skinnys on the front so i figured it was someones drag car......Then i saw him driving it on the road and heard the tiny lil wind up motor it had in it and laughed.

it wasn't a tiny wind up motor that was three rotor motor.. a rotary motor that can take upwads of 600 whp... they rock.

So is there a clear choice yet for stronger motor mounts without sacrificing too much street drivability? That japanese unit sure looks strong but Im worried about all those vibrations inside the car. I have an 03' S and I am saving up for M7 nitrous, 400cc injectors, flywheel, and stronger clutch. With that setup, I think the most vulnerable point will be the motor mounts. Did Randy ever design his own? I didnt see anything on his site, so...any updates?

Need advice mounting engine damper on 2005 S

I was looking through the various posts on engine dampers and the only photo I could find of a 2005 engine damper had a wimpy looking bracket and was mounted at like 25 degrees off-center from the force of the engine rocking. I'd like to do something a little closer to the 2002-3 engine mount style which is mounted in line with the force of the engine. For those who know welding, how feasible would it be to weld a bracket to the engine cradle as indicated in the attached photo of the 2005-style mount?

1FSTMINI, you have an 05... did you end up installing an engine damper?

Also, for those who have a 2005 S, are there powerflex engine mount bushings that fit the new mount style?

Here's the solution for '05/'06 engine mount slop:

It works so well, I can feel gobs of vibration in my seat at idle!

cheers,

Thanks, gandini. Is it welded to the cradle?

I plan to get the Stiffy (build by Ingalls Engineering), which has an adjustable preload, in hopes that I'll be able to adjust the damping resistance vs. vibration level to my liking. If anyone out there has a Stiffy, perhaps they can comment on how effective adjusting the preload actually is...

The brackets are 2" angle iron, which was available and I could work it without having to weld (I don't have that facility.) The top bracket is fitted to the motor mount and is possibly the "weakest" link--time will tell if the 8mm diameter bolt that holds the earth strap is sufficiently big enough for the loads. The frame bracket uses 2 12mm bolts and is pretty sturdy, with all the forces working in the right direction. The NRG damper unit is the same as the Ingalls unit.
cheers,

Partsman,
Where did you get your dampener? Is there a hole in the block that you mounted to? Did you have to drill a hole in the frame to attach to as well on the other side of the dampener? I have a catch can in the area that most guys are mounting these dampeners and I like it that you set it up the way you do.
