Roll Bar in a daily driver
Roll Bar in a daily driver
I've been thinking of putting a "Built By Bones" Bar in my car for the coming season however I'm not sure how this will all work with my insurance. Can some of you that are running bars in their daily drivers comment? I'd like to do the proper safety stuff (bar, seats, & 6pt harnesses) but don't want to get into a awkward situation with my insurance. I am technically making the car more safe but will insurance companies understand this?

to the insurance company, my car is "stock". most modifyed cars they will not insure, you can even have problems insuring a car with a custom 15K paint job. i know i tried. but real race cars don't have insurance. lol

I had a full 6-pt roll cage in a Neon for a couple of years that was driven almost every day. After awhile I removed the front bars and just had the rear roll bar in it. If you do go this route, make sure every inch of the bar that could possibly be impacted by you or passenger/s in a crash are very well padded. There are definitely cases where a roll bar could do more harm than good in a street accident (unless you wear a helmet and full harness on the street all the time). I didn't tell my insurance company about it, I decided to take my chances if something ever happened. Didn't tell them about removing the airbags or any of my other extensive modifications either.

When I talked to my insurance agent about modifying my car, they asked for a list of modifications so that I could be reimbursed for any aftermarket parts that might get damaged in an accident. There was no mention of NOT insuring the car, but rather an extension of my coverage (and they did not allude to a higher premium, either).
I've run 2 cars on the street with cages in them. Like has been said pad the bar everywhere you could contact it. Remember seat belts & bodies stretch a bit under crash loadings.
I always wore my harness. Just couldn't get a safe feeling if I didn't. A roll bar shouldn't be any problem if padded properly. Keep humans out of the back seat of a caged or roll bar equipped car.

I have been driving around with an autopower four point cage for a while now and I don't mind it, does make it hard if you are trying to grab something you threw in the back while you are still sitting in the front seat. I have not told my insurance, as far as they kno the car is stock. I figure if I get in an accident and the car is totalled I will just take my parts out and put them in the next mini. And then if the car gets broken into, and they steal my seats/cage/whatever the original parts from factory with install (what might be covered by insurance) is gonna be much more costly than my aftermarket stuff..in other words the money i would get from insurance would be more than enough to cover the expenses.
