Drivetrain Resonator and 2nd Cat Delete - CM4
the 2015 r60 and r61 seem to have 10hp more with the same set up, has anyone called mini and asked if they can update older r60-61s with a software to get the same output? i asked on facebook and 3 people said yeah if you take your mini in for services you will get the new update and more hp, but then people said nothing changed, just eu specs.
NM Tune
Let me clear a few things up for the OP.
I've had nearly a dozen different exhausts/custom builds between my two R60s over the years, and here's what you need to know.
1) Removing the "second cat" has no impact on the US emissions code, nor will it cause any issues with inspection, etc. This was placed there for EU clean air standards. There is one heck of a restriction from this piece, as I've shown before. The main catalytic converter is a 400-cell, which is more than sufficient for not only the law, but for keeping pollutants out of the air.
2) Removing the resonator is generally done at the same time due to the pipes being so close together. It's a straight-through perf core, so nothing major in blocking sound.
3) Removing the resonator does not introduce any drone into the system, but it does increase the loudness of the system at the tailpipes.
4) If you remove the rear muffler, you will have amazing amounts of drone at 2800-3100 rpm.
5) There is no warranty issue with removing these pieces other than losing the warranty on your stainless exhaust system. Anything AFTER the cut will no longer be covered. The drivetrain and other warranties are unaffected. This is the law, and it's not up to a SM's interpretation.
6) For a simple tune without any mods (the exhaust mod is more for sound on the R60), I would suggest the NM tune. It's $500 out the door, and offers the most bang-for-the-buck on an otherwise stock R60S.
Feel free to ask any other questions, and I'll be happy to answer them.

Theta
I just read on a euro board that the mini DP cat is a 600 cell!
can you or anyone confirm 400 cell or 600 cell?
if it is 600 cell a 400 cell would probably increase performance and not throw a CEL like the 200 cell DPs

Indeed! Mine measured 1.75" at both pinchs!! I just replaced the flex with a 2.25" braided flex. No more restrictions on the exhaust now. Out with the old and in with the new.

1.75" OUCH! my milltek DP back exhaust measured at 2.5" ID before I installed it
Just got a JCW Countryman and it has both resonator and 2nd cat….i know removing both will make it sound better….but seat of the pants feel. Will it give more power, or not really? I believe the exhaust is 2.5 inches already with JCW. Just trying to figure out high on the priority list this will be.

Edit - the JCW is 2.5". I originally thought it was 2.25".

Thanks for the post!
Still confused. The dealer parts illustration shows the jcw intermediate pipe that looks like it replaces the stock resonator. It shows it as a straight pipe that looks it goes from just past the second cat to the muffler. Has anyone installed this pipe & does it fit on the stock r60 exhaust system? Just trying to get a little better sound from the exhaust system . The dealer could not say if it would fit the rest of the stock system. Thanks
As I've said, the JCW intermediate pipe is a different diameter (2.5" vs 2.1x"). It will not fit directly without a step-down coupler and gap welding on both ends (muffler and midpipe).
It will replace the resonator, but stop before the 2nd cat, hence it will not remove the 2nd cat.

Smallest neck-down point is 2.38" at the bend.
I know this is way late, but the 600 cell is the EU DP part #. The US-spec for the R60 2013+ is 400-cell.
I got this from a friend of mine with the system. Obviously, it is bad info. I will edit my original post. Thanks for the clarification.
I want to do this so bad, I miss having more exhaust sound but I decided to lease this car. I would return it to stock but I don't know how they would like either the stock piping clamped or welded back in when turning the car in at lease end.
