Extended warranty/maintenance plan???

Anyone purchase one, or both even?

Just looking for opinions about them...this is my first new car and would just like to know if they are worth it..or just overpriced bundles that will never be used??

i bought the extended maintenance plan

i plan on keeping the mini a long time, my last vehicle i bought in 12/1996, a 1997 gmc sonoma v6 extended cab 4x4 5speed, it now has 287,000 miles on it and still going, my avg miles per year is ~17,000 so i should have about 102,000 on the mini in 6 years

thats 11+ oil/filter changes, at least 2 sets of pads/rotors, 3 coolant changes, air filters, wiper blades, winshield fluid etc

and the extended maintenance also extends the roadside assistance to 6 years

seemed like a good deal

as for the extended warranty, it can be purchased anytime before the standard warranty is up, and mini will sent you a mailing to remind you

i am waiting to see how much warranty work is necessary before extending it ... so far none (6 months and 6,000+ miles)

scott

Here's my thought. Talk to your service rep and ask what mainitenance has to be done within the first 100k and what would the cost be in today's dollars. Understand that you will probably need at least 2 complete brake jobs, transmission flushing, brake fluid flushing, light bulbs, etc, It just might be worth it, Some people do not look at it this way you also have to take into account what you can do yourself. Those days are over for me. I will be purchasing before Betty hits 36k miles.

I did not take either and glad I didn't. Only thing I would have gotten out of them would have been three oil changes and a brake job. Possibly some spark plugs. No way would the plans have paid for themselves.

Thanks for the replies folks. I really have to think about this, I drive a lot....bought the car 4/12....will hit 12,000 miles today!....I"ll hit 36k quick!

I ask because I here nothing but bad experiences with these 2nd Gen cars and costly repairs. But so far I have had no issues with the car...which is great. I plan on changing the oil every 5,000-7,500 and let the dealer do every other. Their intervals are far too long, which I believe is the cause for many people having issues with their cars. I might go with the extended warranty, I would think it would cover much greater costs down the road if the engine decides to go pop or timing chain issues or something. Could be a money saver down the road.

Then again...how long can I hold out before I get a tune? No sense in paying for something only to void it early

I know an independent Mini/BMW shop that does great work for 1/3 the price of the dealer(take my R50 to them) and would probably be cheaper then the total price of the maintenance plan.

Ugh, tough decisions....very little time it feels like!

You still need to figure out what the required maintenance would cost you. It's more than sparkplugs, oil and brakes, What about filters, lightbulbs, fluid changes wheel alignment, etc. Sit down with your SA and go over it. There is a chance that it would pay for itself and then maybe not. You need to make a really educated decision. I am leaning towards it. @18k gotta make the decision soon.

I definitely agree with you. I'm writing everything down and crunching numbers. I plan on keeping this car for a long time, I mean I still have my R50(purchased used), and that car is solid! 102,000miles and ticking.

Oh the joys of new car ownership lol

Buy the extended warranty it is well worth the money. Just remember the price is
negotiable. Check with other dealers on their price.. There is another thread that has a lot of posts...

Also important to consider the added value to a buyer if you need or want to sell before the extended coverage expires. In addition to boosting the sales price, it can make for a quicker sale.

This search was a bit difficult, but I've been wondering the same thing. I only found this one thread--if anyone locates any others that'd be great.

Thanks for the link, and all the responses

It's nice to get peoples different views on the warranty.
