Here's a diagram for you (Possibly NSFW if crash test dummies getting it on is prohibited)

Hey--this is summer. Whatever happened to spreading out a blanket on the lawn?

Oh yeah, fire ants. I forgot.

OK, now I'm confused! So that I don't put my foot in my virtual mouth in future, help me out - what's the luggage compartment called in the US? I always thought it was a trunk in the US and a boot in the UK.

FWIW it's a boot here in Australia - but I always thought trunk made more sense because people used to carry luggage in a trunk but noone ever carried luggage in their boot! (Although the MINI's compartment is so small, maybe "boot" is appropriate...)

In Australia we pick up some UK terms and some US terms - and sometimes, just to be really confusing, we pick up both but use them with different meanings.

Where I live, when most people talk about a trunk, they are talking about the luggage compartment on a sedan. For a hatchback, they call it the hatch. I haven't really noticed any particular name for the luggage compartment on a wagon/van/SUV - people just say they're putting things "in the back." Calling the hatch a boot is a MINI thing. It gets us in touch with the German-ness of the car. (Trying to make a joke here, but I think I missed...)

It's called a trunk, or in some other cases a hatch, as ran-o-matic pointed out. Some people here just like to pretend that they are British or something a long those lines.

NO!! I've Never seen that!! hahahaha thats awesome!!!! he is the reason behind the name though, big rock fan of all types and i got my car around as i got out of school for the summer last year so the name fit works well as the double meaning too, as i concider alice a girl (as a guy would for his car, boat ect..), but the rock shout out works nicely too.

trunks are usually associated with a rear deck lid when i think about it, i was just typing without thinking. in the MINI's case it would probably properly be referred to as the hatch, but calling it by the boot is always fun, as i also refer to the mirrors as wing mirrors and the hood as the bonnet and the windsheild as the windscreen and even find my self thanks to Top Gear saying "Corvette "Zed"06, BMW "Zed"4" hahah

oh and robin about that picture haha.....

In the early days of our fine country the compartment on the rear of horse drawn coaches, where the baggage was carried, was called the "boot". The term "boot" was also used on early motor cars like the Model-T and so on. It was, more then likely, changed to "trunk" by the auto makers for some unknown reason. So, the term "boot" is as much U.S. as it is British.

I've heard the phrase, but I live in the US, just like many on this website - we call it trunk here

Now this brings up an interesting question. If you bought a Ford it would be a U.S. car (granted it was put togeather someplace else) and it would have a trunk. The Mini is made in England and has a boot.

So, are you saying that it should now be called a trunk merely because it is in this country now???

Jim

Wow...this is getting a little childish, isn't it? The debate over trunk/boot or American/British terms exists in another thread...for a reason. "Faux Brit speak" or something of the sort. Maybe you could take this conversation over there and keep this thread helpful to those looking for things we didn't know about the R56 MINI. Just a thought.

Good idea. I guess I got caught up in the moment and this really does belong on another thread. Sorry for the slip up.

Jim

BTW: How can you call this childish with a signature block like yours??

Choosing a personal attack after receiving a critique is also a little childish. We can respect differing opinions and positions without resorting to insults, can we not? My remark about these this exchange being "childish" referred to the tit-for-tat "don't call it that" that was occurring, which to me smacked of playground behavior rather than an exchange of differing ideas or personal choice.

I'm gonna call it a trunk, because that's what it is; you can call it whatever you feel comfortable calling it, being it "boot" or "princess sofia" - makes no difference to me. I was merely replying to the Australian guy who asked what people in America call the place where we put luggage. According to dictionary.com a trunk is, and I quote "automobile, in which luggage, a spare tire, and other articles may be kept." A boot is simply the same word only in British, used by Brits. Seems like if you disagree you should write a letter to the dictionary people and sort it out with them.

And yes if a car is in this country I'm gonna use MY language to describe it.

Have a nice day.

EDIT* responding to the bolded part.

Yes, it should. If I had a Ford and lived in US, it's a trunk. If I had a Ford, and lived in Britain, it's a boot. If I had a Ford, and lived in Russian, its a bagazhnik. Pretty "common sense" to me.

I was merely responding to a question presented by another member. The question was in post 1910, I answered it and then the whole "debate" started....
