R56 How to get MCS to mimic sound of JCW?
How to get MCS to mimic sound of JCW?
I have a '13 MCS and want to mimic the exact exhaust sound of a JCW...does anyone know how to accomplish this?
I posted the other day about whether or not to delete the resonator and a few people said not to and some said to go ahead and do it. Well, I did it at the same time as adding the JCW muffler as I have read a couple of times this is all I would need to do to get the JCW sound. I am not in agreement. Does not sound like stock JCW. My car also had an Akrapovic dp installed a week before the exhaust mods...well, I HATE the sound with the gunshot backfire! I like the stock pop/burble. I could care less about HP gains...I just love the sound of the JCW. I have owned a few of them in my time, and I just do not see the point in paying all of that extra money for how a car sounds, so I settled for my Green Park edition with every single option, with 20k miles and an extended warranty for 17k. Also, my hubby will be removing the Akrapovic dp this weekend and I will be selling it along with the O2 spacer if anyone is interested.
Way Motor advised that I would need to change manifold and get a JCW tune, but the JCW dp and MCS dp are the same. What is so different about a JCW tune and could a performance shop do this?

Hi Bean,
The JCW uses a 28" resonator in place of the shorter resonator and second cat the MCS uses. It has a straight thru design and utilizes a tuned port internally for reflective noise cancelation.
Most aftermarket resonators use a perforated straight through core and sound absorbent material. This design relies on the Q factor of the absorbent material to reduce noise.
Different approaches with different results from a tone perspective.
To duplicate the JCW exhaust note would require installing a JCW resonator. It might be possible to install a 28" side branch resonator tube but the tone would still differ somewhat.

So I wouldn't have to get a "JCW tune and JCW exhaust manifold?"

The 2013 JCW and MCS share the same exhaust manifold. Even if they were different they would have little effect on exhaust note as they are upstream of the turbo.
My stock JCW tune differed from the MCS in that it had pop and burble in normal mode. Pressing sport was unnecessary except to change throttle response and steering effort.
I can adapt a Manic Stage 1 tune to duplicate that but if your happy with the performance level you have it would be less expensive to just press the sport button
My custom Manic tune produces JCW level pop and burble in normal mode and ratchets it up to just short of throwing flames in sport mode. Or as I now like to call it Antisocial Mode. I also removed the JCW exhaust and installed a custom 3" exhaust.

My 2012 JCW with factory tune/exhaust was a rumbly burble when transitioning off throttle at mid RPM that produced muted but noticeable pops when driving more aggressively. Installing a catless DP resulted in much more pops mid RPM and gunfire noise levels when driving aggressively. What it didn't do was drone at highway speeds.

Correct. The pop and burble on an MCS in sport mode is very similar to the JCW in regular mode. Guess I'm not a very good salesman by talking a potential client out of a tune but you really don't need one for what it sounds like your looking for. What will probably need to be addressed is the downpipe. With a high flow or catless downpipe you will get much louder pops in sport mode whether with a stock MCS or factory JCW upgrade tune. No real way around that unfortunately. The Akro you have will certainly be quieter than a catless DP though. Hmmmm, I have owned a few JCWs (2011 HT, 2012 HT, 2014 JCW Coupe), and I do not remember any of them popping without the sport on. 😏
Actually, I removed the resonator off the '14 coupe to get a deeper tone. It sounded pretty good.
I am afraid I am thoroughly confused on what to do now.

Check this thread. Plenty of others experiences in there. 2013 JCW Exhaust pops/burble
Thank you for link. According to what everyone is saying, they did the resonator delete and the sound is even better? As I stated, I too did that on my '14 JCW coupe and liked it. Sooooooo, am I correct in believing that just with the JCW muffler on a MCS, that is all that is needed to mimic the exhaust note of a FJCW? WAY Motorworks is saying that if I were to get a JCW tune, it would cause too much pop--

Did I mention that I also owned a '13 GP? That had the best sounding exhaust of all--if I could get my lil MCS to sound just like that--I would be a happy camper! The pops/burbles are subtle and not obnoxious.

I'd listen to Waylen. He will not try and steer someone wrong just to make a buck. Yes that is one of the reasons he's in the business but he is in my opinion far more concerned with delivering quality service and making customers happy.
The exhaust tone of our vehicles is probably the single most subjective aspect of the vehicle. What sounds good to others may not sound good to you. One of my customers that I tuned had a straight exhaust with no mufflers or cats of any kind. He absolutely loved it but it would have driven me insane inside of ten minutes if it were my vehicle.
Remember what I said about the Akropovic. Your GP used the factory cat DP which is the same unit used on the MCS and JCW so you may end up having to put the original DP back on to get the sound that YOU like best.

There are 3 versions of the R56 exhaust manifold. Two of the versions were for the N14 and one for the N18.
N14 MCS P/N 11627597031
N14 JCW P/N 11627593149
N18 MCS & JCW P/N 11627597031 sometimes referred to as the Gen 3 manifold.
Of these the N18 manifold has the least restrictions and most consistent cross section diameter.

Are you sure about those part numbers? Outmotoring has the 7593149 as the preferred JCW exhaust manifold.....I've been looking for a used one....I'll change to 7597031 if that's the best one. Way's picture shows the same manifold as on Outmotoring....

I pulled those from RealOEM using the following:
2009 MCS N14
2009 JCW N14
2011 MCS N18
2011 JCW N14
2013 MCS N18
2013 JCW N18
I have a Gen 3 manifold in the shop I plan on installing in Vlad when the KO4 hybrid sitting next to it goes on. I'll put it on a flow bench before and the JCW one afterwards. That should put to rest the question of which one flows better.
It would be kind of hard though to believe that BMW would spend a great deal of money and manpower redesigning the N14 into the N18, which also produced more HP across the board while at the same time making the part of the exhaust just before the turbo more restrictive. This would retain more heat energy in the engine and transfer less to the turbine wheel. Stranger things have happened but it's difficult to thumb ones nose at the second law of thermodynamics and come out ahead.

Most people will switch to the JCW exhaust and then hit the sport button on there pre 2010 MCS and run it hard, i swear after a hard run my MCS sounded like my JCW a little bit more
Now the 2011 MCS pop more stock and even more when the sport buttons on.

Soooo, took Akrapovic dp off and put stock one on. I think we wasted money on JCW muffler and doing resonator delete--I honestly do not hear a difference in what it sounded like prior...and certainly does not sound like a true JCW. Damn!
Maybe I should have just stuck with the JCW--but I got this one for such a good price. I really wish there was a way to get it to sound exactly like a true JCW. :(
Ahhh well--
