New turbo *Help*

So my car hit 123k miles and is drinking oil pretty bad. I have to add 1 qt every 400 miles. I have no leaks and everything on the motor is dry to where I cannot see any leaks. Talking to a few people they are surprised my turbo has lasted this long.

I took off the intake tube and felt the shaft when the motor is cold. I do not feel any play in the shaft but i do have oil sitting on the inside of the coupler where there intake tube sits. Leading me to believe the seals are going and that is where my oil is going.

I do not have $1000 to go with an oem turbo so after some looking around i came across this. Options please and what else will i need?

Why not send the turbo to a rebuild shop like Gpop Shop?

http://gpopshop.com

Or look for a low mileage take off on the Marketplace. I sold my for $400 and it only had 15,000 miles or so.

I'd maybe try and find a used one and then send off yours to get rebuilt and sell it. You might be able to come out even if you do this. Just had a buddy who thought he had a turbo issue and bought a used one and is now getting his current one rebuilt. I'm just a little wary about buying such items off eBay, but that is just me and that turbo could be a fine replacement. Give DT or Way a call, I'm sure they may have a used one laying around. You could also ask them advice about if they believe the turbo is your culprit before spending money to replace it. Good luck!

Why do you think it is the turbo...The turbo itself does drink the oil. It only uses the oil to lub the bearings. If the seal where bad it would be smoking out the tell pipe. Every 400 miles is like every gas tank. My mini had 116K miles on it and the turbo was still performing great. If your car is using that much oil it should not be hard to find. How much oil do you have to add? Check the radiator fluid to see if there is any oil/water mixture going on?

Radiator is good and clear blue antifreeze. I have no oil coming out of any part of the motor. I do drive on the freeway a lot. I dont see smoke coming out of the tail pipe as i drive the car and not ride behind it. Yes every time i fill up at the pump i have to put 1 qt of oil in it.

Excessive oil in the pre turbo intake tract is caused by a few things;

worn bearings in the turbo that are not able to keep a proper dynamic seal, or excessive crankcase pressure causing oil migration into the PCV system.

You need to have the car properly diagnosed, the consumption can be caused by a faulty turbo, valve guide seals, worn rings, excessive crankcase pressure and you're having liquid oil make its way into the PCV system.

We have rebuilt turbos in stock and ready to ship, they carry an 18 month warranty.

Check prices on renting a car for a week or two, and do the rebuild. You could still come out money ahead.

And I agree, get a solid diagnosis before acting. Your reasoning sounds good to me, but I've been convinced I had something figured out and discovered I was wrong - and I've been working on cars for 40+ years.

I agree with everybody else. The car needs to b properly diagnosed. That's a lot of oil going somewhere and needs to b addressed swiftly as a motor cost 3000+ and ur car will down for a few days

Im curious if the seals in the turbo are unable to keep the oil where it needs to be wouldn't that cause black smoke to come out the exhaust. We're not talking about a little oil but a quart of oil every 400 miles,

Have you ever replaced the oil turbo inlet tub, oil filter or oil cooler gaskets? They are notorious for leaking. You may not see the oil dripping on the ground because it is dripping on the down pipe and burning up. Usually will notice smoke coming from under the hood when your at a redlight but if you are constantly moving you won't see anything

If you do replace the oil feed line which as stated above is notorious for leaking (sometimes profusely) go with the replace from Detroit Tuned, same price if not cheaper than OEM and it will never leak.

Nick,

The best route of getting a hold of us is to give us a call. I believe we just spoke with you about setting up an appointment to give the car a look.

As for the car using oil and it not smoking; most synthetics don't smoke much, I've only seen a couple of cars that smoked due to oil ingestion.

Oil is able to get past the bearings of the turbo easiest at near idle, or low boost situations as the bearing clearance to the center cartridge create a dynamic seal, which is only sealing optimally under speed and load.

I have a 2007 MCS with 127000 on it as well. I bought and it too had an oil consumption. I would smell a slight oil whiff at stop lights but no other signs. Upon deeper on a lift inspection I found the most common cause of leaks on these cars at this age is the oil filter and oil cooler seals. I replaced these and while I was in there the turbo oil feed and return lines. No more oil smell or consumption. The oil in the mouth of the turbo is from the PCV system and the only solution to this is a catch can. I installed one and now my turbo is dry. I'm surprised no one brought up these suggestions before suggesting s replacement turbo. I hope my recent experience with this same issue helps

Look at post 13. Oil filter adapter gaskets, and oil feed lines were replaced 1500 miles ago. There isnt any oil leaking anywhere as also stated in the above posts.

What wasnt stated is the catch can and I have had one on the car since I had bought it.

Car goes in Tuesday to get some diagnosis.
