CPO 2013 MCS with 45k miles. Am I crazy?

So my wife and I have been looking in the Jersey area for a 2013 CPO MCS to no avail. She found a Bayswater in Arizona for $17k with 45k miles. What are peoples thoughts on a situation like this? It's a beautiful car, but the mileage kinda scares me! Have at it...

Let it sit there and idle for an extended period of time see if it smokes.

You'll have to get the valves cleaned at a minimum with that mileage.

17k is way too much money whoa, if your going to spend that kind of money you can find an f56.

Much stronger purchase imo

We tried an F56 and didn't like it! That's why we're looking at 2013s. $17k with the CPO is on the less expensive end of what we've seen. Most of the 2013s we've looked at with 25k miles or less
are $20k and up.

I certainly haven't seen any F56s for less than $20k. Where are you finding these?

It's price is consistent with both Edmunds and NADA Blue Book. Actually a little low in the band.
If it's a CPO it will come with an extended factory warranty. 2 years and 50K in miles, so basically you're covered out to 6yrs./100K.
I wouldn't expect it to smoke??? It's the same year and mileage as my 2013 JCW, and mine doesn't smoke at all. My 2009 with 130,000 doesn't smoke either, and neither car has had the valves walnut bead blasted.
It's a beautiful car. Worth looking into imho.

Just curious why not? I was kind of getting all giddy over those.

Low friction brass guides are a common problem, timing chain as well.

I'm sure there are guys with no problems lol but there are plenty of these with issues sub 50k miles.

With a cpo you'd be fine I imagine. My pricing was in terms of private owners etc but that's still too much imo.

Here's an f56 for 17k

F56 is a true BMW. The French showed their influence on previous generations. I own one of the frenchies (r56) and in my experience they do require work. The prince engine is pretty well known to be a dog, no offense to anyone here.

That mileage wouldn't scare me but I would see it as a bargaining chip..high mileage for year means big discount or no deal to me.

Yeah, we thought it looked nice as well. The salesman was kind enough to go out to the car and take photos of the few paint chips on it. Other than those he said it was very nice. Again, being in New Jersey, the car being in Arizona, it's a tough decision to either fly out and look a it, or buy it sight unseen. I'm wondering what shipping will cost!

Wow! I can't imagine why that car would be that cheap. Seriously. I really was not impressed at all by the F56. I just sold our pristine 2005 JCW and the difference in feel of those 2 cars is worlds apart. I preferred my R53.

Yeah, I might try to get them to come down on it a bit. Especially if I'm looking to have it shipped.

It's more common than you think. There are plenty more f56 and r56 models out there with less mileage for less money than what your looking at. Nice ride, but I personally wouldn't spend more than 14k out the door for that one.

Here's a similar mileage one. You could prolly even get them closer to 13g. Private owners get even cheaper.

I ran a boroscope down them at about 100k. They were dirty, but nothing like the pic's I've seen.
I helped a coworker do his valves, and they were really bad.
I should look again, and will probably do them when I do some suspension work. I'm starting to get a very slight feedback from the road, so it's time to look at bushings and tie rods.

Make a mini vacation out of it, and drive it back.
We bought one in Pittsburgh. My wife flew out, took a cab to the dealer, which they paid, and drove it home to eastern CT.

I looked at one in LA, and the shipping for closed transport was going to be about $1400. Open transport is less. We ended up finding a car in Ramsey NJ. Much closer.

Thanks for your help, but like I said originally, we're looking for a CPO car. I know I can get one for cheaper private sale, I just want the peace of mind of a warranty. I thought $17k for that car was pretty reasonable? Especially with it being warranted for another 3 years and 55k miles?

I'd love to if I could get the time off work! My wife has her mind made up on certain options (xenons, SatNav, etc.) and loves the Bayswater edition, specifically the Kite Blue with blue stitching on the seats. We just saw this yesterday and thought maybe it was the right one.

Hey, you asked so that's my opinion. The cars worth whatever your willing to pay for it. If the car is everything you've ever wanted then go for it. You just have to ask yourself if a limited warranty is worth 5k plus to you. If it makes you sleep better at night then more power to you.

I liked it, lots of bells and whistles as well. I wouldn't worry about valve cleaning. Isn't much of a problem with the n18 engine. At that mileage, it is due for new brakes all around. Has that been done?

As posted in my intro post, I bought a 2013 MCS hardtop a week ago. It was at my nearest dealer, MINI North Scottsdale (Penske dealership along with their sister store in nearby Tempe). After not finding a primo private party 1st gen R53 MCS equipped with Getrag, I started looking for newer lower mileage 2nd gen R56 cars. Since most folks seem to prefer auto trans, there are few out there that met my own preferences.

The 2013 MCS I bought was the only one of several in inventory with manual gearbox plus had less than 18k miles in an acceptable color combo for my tastes. It didn't have any "packages" but was OEM equipped with several standalone options which appealed, including 17" wheels, glass roof, heated seats and other stuff. My objective of buying private party thus avoiding AZ sales tax was shot but being CPO, I achieved an additional year of MINI warranty. PM me for actual purchase price details if you'd like.

BTW, love your user name 67veloce. As mentioned in my linked intro post, I owned a '74 GTV from new until 1999. I still have sellers remorse to this very day...

Haha! I understand the remorse you speak of. I sold my '67 GTV in 2007 and will never forgive myself. My wife understands that once this MINI purchase is done, another GTV is in my future. Hopefully another stepnose, but I wouldn't turn a later one away either! I'll pm you.

Thanks for your opinion. I don't understand what you mean by "limited" warranty. It's my understanding that the CPO is simply an extension of the original factory warranty. Am I wrong? I'm not sure where you're getting $5k plus. That's insinuating I can find 2013 MCS with similar mileage for less than $12k? I must not be looking in the right places?

If you like it, then get it. To me it is 3 long days of driving across the country, probably not that much fun, plus 2000 miles. See if the dealer can arrange shipping, Penske is huge.

Nice color, nice options. Have them check tires and brakes (personally a big fan of Michelin PSS and winter tires/wheels).

Have fun,
Mike

I would have the car shipped.
