2010 MCS - New brakes & rotors questions
Hello,
I'm about to do my front brakes and rotors for the first time.
I've never bought them before but I'm pretty confident I'll be able to do the swap myself.
Do these prices seem normal?
Would you recommend these Bosch products?
Am I getting a pair of rotors or just a single rotor here?
I appreciate anyone's feedback. Thanks!

Check RockAuto.com for pricing on brake components - that pricing seems high for a front rotor.
Also, you'll need a T50 Torx bit to remove the rotors, make sure you pick up one beforehand.
Did you get those right from their site?
The EBC pads are pretty common, most of the vendors on this site have them. I have had good luck with the Reds on my car as well.
Also, if a rotor is not plated/coated, it will rust pretty quickly. Depending on the wheels that you have, that may or may not be a big deal to you.
Have fun,
Mike

Pelican Parts, ECS and the Tire Rack are good sources of brake components as well.
If very low dust is important to you, get the Akebono Euro pads. Otherwise the EBC Redstuff will dust much less than stock and is much easier to modulate at low speeds.
Brake rotors from Zimmerman, Balo and ATE are all of good quality. You'll need to shop around to minimize shipping costs. Pelican ships for free on orders above $75.00......
I don't use brake wear sensors. I monitor the brakes for wear as I prefer to do that and not spend the extra $40 on sensors. If you do the same you'll need to short the wires on the old sensors.

Way Motor Works sells great brake "packages" and is a forum sponsor as well.
Here is an example... http://www.waymotorworks.com/wmw-red...-cooper-s.html If you don't need the rear brakes call Way and see if they will do a package on just the front brake components.
On a vaguely related note... using Amazon to tell whether a part is a direct fit for your car isn't ideal. Often times Amazon doesn't have their part to car cross referencing correct so you can order incorrect parts. Verify part numbers with either the manufacturer or another website before you order car parts off Amazon.

One thing to keep in mind - rear calipers will need to be retracted (pushed in) while being rotated, else they wont budge (hand brake feature). If you don't have one of the brake caliper tools handy, consider buying one while you are shopping:
I've never run into Bosch as a brake parts supplier in over 20 years of wrenching, so that probably means they are re-badging someone else's product.
You may want to consider comparison shopping from some of the other MINI sources that were cited above.
I've personally bought MINI car parts from Amazon without any regret. In the worst case you can always return them for free.
Looks like your price quote was for 1 rotor.
You will obviously need 1 per wheel, if they are worn. Or you can leave them alone and replace just the pads (I usually go through 2 full sets of pads before 1 rotor is worn to MIN spec).
HTH,
a
Just did my fronts and rears. Went through tire rack as there wasn't a huge difference from rock auto. Shipping was fast and free too. I went with the akebono euro pads as i heard great things about them and the centric high carbon rotors. Install was a breeze.

If you want to stay with factory parts check out http://thebmwminipartstore.com. They have great pricing on OEM parts along with fast shipping.

For rotors check out our WMW rotors as they are very cost effective without sacrificing performance or reliability. We use them on every brake job we do in our shop. If you have any questions feel free to call me at the shop I can tell you about all the brands and differences we've found. Please remember we actually have a MINI repair shop and not just a dot.com website so I can give you real feedback.
We have some options here: Also dependent if you have the JCW sport brakes. We have akebono / zimmerman sets for the Cooper S non JCW brakes.
