Radio/input display in Speedo breaking up

Have a 2007 and suddenly the LED looking display within the speedo starts losing pieces of the lines and characters go missing when the car is warm in hot weather. At night it settles down to normal and everything is readable.

Anyone experience this? Know of a fix?

Are the missing pixels all along the same horizontal line(s) or column(s)? Or is it more random chunks? If it is predictable pattern then likely you have a failed solder joint or a crack in the pcb for one of the row/column driver connections to the display. In this case you have to disassemble the speedo to take out the display and find an electrical engineer or electronics tech with a lab microscope and fine tip soldering iron to find and fix the bad connection.

It is also possible that there is a chip in the display that is thermally sensitive and going bad, so it starts flaking out at higher temps.

Third possibility is the fault is in the radio unit itself, or the connection from the radio unit to the display. But based on the description of the problem I'd go with the first guess.

It follows the horizontal outlines, but then there are letters that are vertically missing pixels.

I'm good at soldering however I have no idea how to take apart the speedo ie remove it from the dash. Is there any instructions on this?

Much appreciated.

good luck - and unless you really know what you are doing with fine pitch parts and soldering and have the right tools available to you, find someone who does!

I'm very good with a soldering iron. I just don't think I'm up to pulling it all apart. Best start looking for someone in the Los Angeles area who has the experience to do it.

This seems to be becoming a problem with many cars. And replacement as far as i know has been the only way to fix it. But that does not mean that it could be fixed. just not seen anyone do it yet.

If its a growing common problem then MINI should be fixing it for free. We should all band together.

None of the steps in the video are difficult, there's just a lot of them. If you get the service manual it will have step by step directions. Just time and patience and you can get it done.

Is the service manual readily available?

Revival of a dead post! I have an 07 MCS with just over 24k miles on it.. I notices this for the first time today! I live in the Boston area, it was about 77-80 degrees and I was sitting in terrible 95N traffic.. Practically not moving.. when I noticed it.. I started the car up again about an hour ago to check on it and it the display was still a little faded in some areas but much better than it was before.. Here is a picture of what it looked liked when I first noticed the issue.

Has anyone found out what caused this? My A/C crapped out about two weeks ago.. Not that I used it very much if at all prior to that (just got my car in October).. Could these two be related?

Battery

How old is your battery?
I had missing things, replaced battery snd all is good.
Strange issues arise when batt is going out.
Have it tested. HTH
