R56 Double Pull Doors
Double Pull Doors
I'm wondering whether anyone knows why BMW chose to require passengers/drivers to pull twice on the door release in order to open the doors from the inside. Also, is there any way to change this? I find that passengers are especially perplexed by this requirement and sometimes simply try to pull harder on the release, which of course doesn't help and may result in a broken release. I had an R53 and it did not require the double pull.
You just have to program your auto lock turn off using your directional stalk in the settings section. The double pull is found in lots of cars. Think about it this way: if you were in a more "regular" car, you would have to find the lock/unlock button or find the little lock indicator to pull or push one way so you can then pull on the handle. So what would you rather do, pull twice or unlock the door by finding the means to do so and then go back to pulling again? If you turn off that auto lock, then you shouldn't have to deal with this as much.
I have had passengers try the single pull and find they can't open the door! I am now used to telling any new passenger "pull twice" as they go to get out. I thought about turning off the autolocks, but I like the doors being locked without me having to do it, so decided against it.

I just tell my passengers its a state of the art locking system

The R53 has a programmable option to auto-lock the doors when the car reaches 10 mph, and another option to auto-unlock when the engine is turned off. The default is no auto-unlock, which requires a double pull (if the door is locked).
My understanding is that the R56 only has an auto-lock option (no auto-unlock option like the R53). So if you disable auto-lock, it will be a single pull to open the door (unless you had manually locked using the toggle switch). But if you enable auto-lock, you'll be stuck with the double pull.

The problem is when dropping off a passenger without turning off the ignition.
If you love the autolock, then manually unlock from the toggle before exit. If the car didn't have double pull, that's what you would do anyway. I dislike autolock, and if I ever wanted to lock the doors while driving, I can do it manually.
Where is that programming option found?

Not a simple DIY though.

So obviously this is not a standard user programming issue? I was thinking it was. If is isn't I'm really not interested. In this case I would have to agree with other posters. Turn off auto lock or unlock the doors before they exit.
Personally I like the way it is. In most cases it's just my wife and i in our cars most of the time and we know how they work.
