Hoping for the Woosh.

*NOTE: I am in no way a mechanical type of person*

Question, and this may sound silly, but I'm getting an '08 MCSa which of course is turbo-charged. Now, when I rode in a firend's Subaru WRX (also turbo-charged) but manual, I heard this cool little "woosh" thing every time he let off the gas (and/or shifted...). He said my automatic wouldn't make that sound....is that right? Or maybe I won't hear the woosh as profoundly, but shouldn't it still woosh?

It should still wooosh as you described. what your talking about is a blow off valve or bov
the stock one is generaly pretty quiet
so if you can find a aftermarket one for your car thats all you need
im unsure if there is one made for your car right now but i suppose you can look into it.
Or you could see if you can modify your stock one.....
good luck
and btw the woosh or chrip gets cops attention better than a red car

Yikes! Oh well, I totally love the sound of it!

So I guess there's not really a difference between the automatic and manual in that respect then. It would be very cool to have it be nice and loud, especially with the paddle shifting!

Sounds like many of the aftermarket intakes out there can amplify the BOV a bit.

you are not going to hear the woosh anywhere near what you hear on a WRX. You really have to listen for it. I don't think that the MCS even has a BOV. I remember reading something about excess pressure being recirculated instead of being released.

It probably makes it more efficient or something that way. Well darn. Anyway, the WRX sounded amazing! I'll just have to drive with the music off and maybe I'll be able to hear a hint of a BOV., maybe..

there are two ways to get this sound... either get an aftermarket intake, or diy cai or get the forge bov.

Your friend probably has a BOV but they are not good for the car. BOV's vent to the atmosphere which causes the enging to run rich because of the air that was counted for then lost.

Most all turbo cars have stock BPV's even the WRX. I would just recommend goin with a DIY CAI, check the mods section.

As for the auto situation.... you may only get the noise in manual mode but im not for sure.

BTW: the exhaust note on a WRX is one of my favorites of all cars.

You can add a cold air intake. That will give you the woosh.

any time you build boost then let off you will hear it. So with an auto you will get the wssshh when you let off the gas. Being an auto just means you wont have any engine braking.

and just to add....you can even build boost and make the woossh just by flooring your car (revving it up) then letting off. (not recommended)

Guess I'm really screwed then, with my CAI and CR/W paint

(I've actually never been pulled over in this car)

whoosh

The only whoosh I get is from the air leak coming through the window seal .
Maybe there is no whoosh 'cause I have a non-S, which I am beginning to love nonetheless. Although I have to admit I am growing more envious of the S torque and power on demand (like on the wifee's '06 S). Ah well, maybe we'll have to upgrade to another S down the road ...

If you want a little power and some more sound including the whoosh. Do what I did, put on a DDM Works Street CAI.

My MCSa makes wonderful sounds. Also, the automatic does get engine braking, that is why you slow down when you downshift using the paddles. At least as I understand engine braking.

yes an automatic will engine brake if downshifted. It doesn't so much if left in gear an then the gas pedal is released.

even a foam panel filter will help give you a little of this noise, but not to the extent of a BOV.

This will work for you.
Then you can also add the DDM strut tower brace/caps if they ever become available....

yup, nothing beats the boxer rumble...

Anyway, the reason it is bad is because when air enters the intake, the ecu accounts for that air and when you let off the gas with an atmospheric BOV, all that air is let free... This leads to the engine running rich because it thinks that air is still available. Thats how it is on a wrx, and for the most part the stock BPV does a more than adequate job at preventing turbo surge.

As for the MINI i think its the same situation... but i cant say for sure.

With my trueflow foam filter the noise is more than enough and its a cheap and easy mod.

but forge bov isnt really a "bov" tho... its a bov adapter =p no where close to an atmospheric bov you see in some cars... but i see where your getting at with the "rich" part... it makes sense but its one of those "mini's should do that on their own" thing =[

when i put it in.. it was a "sandwich" plate with holes you put in between... but i really dont know =/ hope its not bad, but i swear it makes it spool faster =]
