R56 What options can be installed after the fact?
What options can be installed after the fact?
So like many others I am in the process of trying to build a mini S. I have read many threads that all ask what options are worth it. Well from one of the posts within said thread, from Modnar I believe, I got an idea. How about we put together a list of all the options that must be installed at the factory and what can be done after the fact.
I am coming from the Honda/Acura world. So I am handy with a wrench. And it is a little daunting when I look at all the options that I would love to have but right now the finances don't permit it. I was hoping I could buy what had to be installed at the factory and install other things myself later. You know spending 250 dollars on a trim piece is a bit much...
So for instance, Nav system is a factory install, but I would think the sport suspension, for the S, could be installed by me, and a wrench. Or the Aero kit I am sure I could install.
Any thoughts?

HA! But you might just be right! a few posts down they are quoting 800+ just to install the other headliner, thats just for parts. But out of curiosity are the bonnet stripes vinyl or painted?
bonnet stripes are vinyl-if you're interested, check out the vendors through here (e.g. Aesthetic Creations--not an endorsement, just one I remember), as there are many different options than just the factory ones!
Almost everything electrical needs to be factory installed, or is much cheaper that way. An exception is upgrading to aftermarket speakers, but still, getting the HIFI and replacing speakers is more cost-effective than going standard and adding an amp.
Suspension stuff can be changed later with JCW parts, or third party versions. Many go for the third part suspension parts. Sway bars are the most cost-effective upgrade, but many do springs, shocks, etc. However, some of the factory suspension options are inexpensive for what they are.
There have been people who have installed the aero kits. Color matching is the biggest issue.
Wheels are much less expensive and much lighter than factory wheels. Go for cheap 16" wheels on an MCS from the factory. Then sell them in the NAM marketplace, or use them for snow tires.
The JCW Stage I engine kit can be dealer installed later. The JCW Stage II MINI is factory built only due to new pistons, clutch, and transmission.
Common things people regret not ordering from the factory are:
Anthracite Headliner
Rear Fog Lights - many do this just to avoid having a blank space in a bank of toggle switches.
White Turn Signals
Park Distance Control must be factory installed.
The NAV integrates the audio controls, Park Distance Control, Bluetooth (if you have it), navigation, trip computer, and various car settings. One big feature is that when the NAV is giving audio instructions, the music is automatically paused. Same is true for Bluetooth phone calls. The NAV must be done at factory build.
Aftermarket GPS systems are less expensive, and easier to upgrade, but have to supply their own audio, or be plugged into the AUX. They cannot pause the music and must compete with it.
More options for stripes with aftermarket
Shift ***** should definitely be purchased aftermarket.

One thing cheaper was the the alarm system I got installed for $400 total (vs. $500 for factory install) from Morristown Mini. Most other dealers charge a lot more than $500, though. Others have also installed the parts themselves and got the dealer to just program the car for it.

Robin's post is very helpful and very true. To add to it I will say:
Xenons (if you think you'll ever want them, get them at the factory as they are impossible to put on afterwards and if they were they'd cost you a ton. I know because I ended up reordering to get them).
Bluetooth ($500 at the factory, but a lot more to get it done at the dealer, this is the one option I regret not getting).
