Optimum tire size for 16 inch rims

After trolling the board for a couple mos, I pulled the trigger on an 08 Cooper S. I went with the 17 inch crowns with the run craps all seasons. My plan is to use them for winter duty.

So I want to go with a set of 16 inch (probably Rota RBs) for summer use. What is the best size for normal driving? I am in Germany so that means Autobahn runs. The Mini is for my wife so it will not get too flogged. I seen 205/50/16 and 205/45/16.

Anyone bought from these guys?

You'll get a lot more info on tires in the Tires, Wheels, & Brakes forum:

A 215/50R 16 would give you just about the exact same overall diameter as the stock 195/55r16 and still give you more rubber on the road. A 215 will fit just fine on the stock rim, I've got second set of stock 16's for Auto X that I put 225/45r16's on, they are a bit wide but still fit well. 215's would look great!

I'm running Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S (all season) 205/55ZR16 on Rota RB 16x7 wheels. Their O.D. is about 0.4" larger than stock. As a result, the built-in error in the speedometer is diminished. The rpm per mile is 836 which is about 2% less than the stock Dunlap SP Sport 01 DSST 205/45ZR17 that came on the original Crown Spoke 17x7s that came with the car.

Edit: Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S 205/50ZR16 are about 0.4" smaller than stock O.D.

Any problem using TPMS on the Rota RBs? I have a BRG mini and was thinking of going with the gun metal 16s. I guess they could be powder coated to match the car, right? Also I assume the RBs are hub centric for the new R56.

I have the older rotation speed based system TPM system, so no sensors.

However, I hear that the sensors will fit on most wheels. I have the Royal Silver color and it is some sort of paint or powder coating. You would have to have that stripped, I think.

I don't recall when the TPMS switched systems but there are some threads around here if you search.

Off-topic: If you do the gun metal RBs on the BRG, please take some pics. I'm thinking about the same setup.

16x7 with toyo 225-50-16 t1r for the street. judging by the specs that tire should fit that rim.

They were switched starting with the some August 07 builds.

Yeah I like the 215 size. Good optimization of rim and handling without getting too far, plus keep the speedo as accurate as it was when you got the car at least.
