Yup--one year ago today (21st) I finally got my baby! The R56 model was released on the 17th, so I got one of the first to hit these shores. I know my MA was tired of my daily calls at the end. Was that what made him leave MINI?

What a trip it's been! I still stand there and admire Zippeee! while I'm waiting for the dogs to do their thing. And oh, is she red! I never had a red car before, and apparently most other people haven't, either. Ever look at all the blah colors foisted on the public? They're missing something, I think.

You want a banana split Blizzard, you go girl!! BTW, my anniversary is coming up 4/6. I would have had it earlier, but a reorder had to be done as there was that silly code mixup on the steering wheels, and the first one showed up with a three spoke wheel but no multifunction steering wheel buttons and cruise control. On the reorder I dropped the piano black dash and went to brushed alloy, also ditched the wheel style (can't remember the name, it's those jobs that look kind of "loopy" for bridge spokes. I still need to ditch the runflats and get some lighter wheels. Love the car, even though my DL is endangered every time I get behind the wheel. The very fact that my sweet Grinnall Scorpion has only been out of the garage THREE TIMES since the Mini arrived speaks volumes about the fun factor of a modern Mini. I miss the 62 Cooper, but I don't miss it when I want to hit the freeway or truly ACCELERATE!

Red is nice. My first car was red, the Italian International Racing Color. I almost went for red, but my practical side won out.

I think Mini Red is better than all of the other reds on the street. why? becuase it's a mini, that's why!

Thanks, guys! You know, there's a reason I picked CR for Zippeee! (don't forget the ! ). Back in the late 60's and early 70's, I used to watch Minis race--and win--and they were usually red. Since then I always wanted a race-car-red MINI.*

It took a lot of years (a gentleman never asks how many, right?), but I finally got her!

The really nice thing is that after all these miles and months, the only thing I'd change is the addition of rear fogs. I remember thinking that we don't get much fog here, so I didn't order them. Not until someone on NAM mentioned "heavy rain" did it dawn on me--THAT we DO get!

*I know, I know, red racing cars are supposed to be Italian. Not at this track, though. (Can anyone tell me why German racers have historically been silver? There really IS a reason. A ride in Zippeee! for the winner!)

 

When corporations usurped countries, international racing numbers were replaced by corporate colors. Red & white for Marlboro...

The Germans thought that it was silly to add the weight of paint and left the body polished aluminum.

 

Very, very close--actually, Mercedes was just a skosh over the weight limit for F-1 cars in the 30's, and leaving the bodies silver rather than painting them made the grade.

Now--do I go to "Paradise" or do you come to Texas for your ride?

A story exists that the origin of the Silver Arrows was accidental. The international governing body of motor sport prescribed for 1934 onwards a maximum weight limit of 750 kilograms for Grand Prix racing cars, excluding tyres and fuel. When the Mercedes-Benz team placed its new Mercedes-Benz W25 on the scrutineering scales prior to the first race (the Eifelrennen at the Nürburgring) in spring 1934, it allegedly recorded 751 kg. Racing manager Alfred Neubauer and his driver Manfred von Brauchitsch were at first baffled, before allegedly hitting on the idea of scraping all the white paint from the bodywork. The story continues that next day the shining silver aluminium beneath was exposed and scrutineering was passed. After a successful race of the 320 hp cars, the nickname Silver Arrow was born, according to the legend. However, this story did not appear until Alfred Neubauer's biography was published in 1958, and no reference to it has been found in contemporary sources. Furthermore, Neubauer cannot reasonably be considered a reliable source, considering his fictitious account of the 1933 Tripoli Grand Prix.

Congratulations on your anniversary! We're scheduled to take delivery sometime in March, which will be close to the 5 year anniversary of our first test drive!

 

I know, Robin, but I've heard the "story" a couple of times before, so it probably isn't an Urban Legend. It certainly makes sense--paint is about 10 or 11 pounds per gallon. (Did you know there are as much as 1100 pounds of paint on a 747?)


Probably so, but I'd need my MINI to make it fun. Do you realize how far it is just to get across Texas? B-O-R-I-N-G!
